...and they buy-in Renault diesels for the A/B/C/CLA classes. And the Smart is a Twingo.

They're firmly in bed together.

What is the Nissan/VW connection?

I'm assuming it's a suggestion that the Amarok is a Navara. It isn't - they're completely unrelated.

"with a variety of target customers in mind."

quaint... I think there is one main customer in mind, businesses who buy these "commercial" vehicles, claim back the VAT and make use of van BIK rates for director/employee vehicles.

Yep, it's the Renault K9K, same as in Dacias, Clios and Micras. Developed from the Energy family of engines, which was developed from the Cleon-Fonte family, which first saw the light of day in the Renault 8 in 1962...

The R9M 1.6 from the QashQow and Scenic is also used in the C-class, but that was at least a clean-sheet design this decade.

Great isn't it!?! Even goes through the toll as a car!
I love pickups and love that people hate them quite so much too, I don't dislike the drive and enjoy it driving as a commercial but I get it fully loaded and pay a fraction of what my colleague pays for his A200 AMG sport that doesn't have leather, dab or sat nav! Its regularly used for work to justify the "commercial" element but makes a great family vehicle and i can lob my bike in the back without dismantling it or strapping it to the roof.
This merc is probably a step too far for me personally but I do like it.

A generic google image search for "VW Amarok" does not prove that it is related. It just shows us what it looks like - which we already know. I can't find anything suggesting that the two are related in any way - so, got anything?

May be swayed with a V8 AMG version however.
That would be the most pointless Merc ever. Huge engine, with weight of probably 2.5 to 3 tonnes struggling to get to 60 in decent time or do more than 15 mpg. Sound like a dream come true :P And let's not forget how handy and agile this'll be on British roads and in towns.

But aside from that, I can see Merc decided there are still niches none of their innumerable models fill. As if their range wasn't complicated enough as it is.

We know they're not related. Housen can be wrong as much as he wants
