It could be either way wink

Common sense says a smaller turbo coming on boost faster and at lower revs will be more economical but I can't remember if the STi heads are better flowing, the aero could help but the larger scoop and tyres would hurt - it's too close to call IMO.

I don't use motorways if possible as they are so dull, I can't remember using 6th at all in my BMW (also dull so it didn't last long)
Fair enough, like I said, I'm looking for justification to buy one, so will take anything I can get.

Then look into LPG - circa £1500 for a decent kit (BRC, OMVL etc) to be fitted - generally paid back within a year or two.

I'm telling you it's true as I have one! I average 25/26 mpg and have had 28+. 6th gear helps enormously. I've owned a WR1 which averaged 18/19 and an RB320 which managed 21/22 - forester STi is more economical despite being heavier and (in the case of the RB) having more or less the same engine. No idea why. Explore the Subaru section as there's a thread on this very thing.

XT must be a thirsty old bus.

It's not happening til the spring, but I'll probably be looking at 8-11k as that's what the fresh imports seem to be going for. That said, if we trigger Article 50 and the pound crashes, the dream may die! Or, I just buy one from a UK owner.

I wasn't doubting you re the mpg, btw, it was more a rhetorical question to get you to elaborate. Thanks for doing so. I've basically wished I spent more on my car four years ago and just got an STi then. I love it but the auto box is terrible, and I love the STi as the ultimate sleeper. Would be tempted to remove all the pink stickers, too.

Yep, I've got an STI, it's awesome. Averaging about 28mpg, mixed driving conditions over around 5000 miles. A few 100mile plus motorway runs, 30 mile a day cross country commutes. Lots said about the good things, the bad are wind noise, crap stereo and the ability to make you think you are Colin McRae when all your doing is popping to Asda!

On topic, I am in the same situation with my Roadster. I figure I spend the money on keeping the mechanicals tiptop and further down the line when the paint looks really really bad, I'll cross that bridge then. I did just get a replacement roof, though

Just throw my experience in here.
I have run a Forester STI and it was a joy and would return a reasonable economy as Macky17 has already said. I can also vouch for the fact that the UK 2.5XT is far more thirsty is I have a manual one now with the prodrive pack and it struggles to get over 20 mpg ever and just to crown it all it is no way near as nice/fun as the STI frown

Your RB only got 22? I saw 26 once in mine, then 28 after it's engine rebuild.

22ish in mine too. I once, driving like a saint, just to see, got to 26, but only once.
