Took my 200 mile old car in to a friends garage for new suspension fitting. Went to pick it up for him to show me a crack at the bottom of the windscreen. 200 mile old car remember. 100% wasn't there when I dropped the car off but maybe, just maybe, I'd collected a stone chip in those 200 miles that developed into a crack when the car was lifted on their 2 poster. My friend offered to sort it whichever way I wanted.

Excess for the insurance companies chosen screen fitter was £60, if I wanted to use someone else then excess was £100. I just had the screen done through Lotus and stumped up the £100. It's one of those things. If you've screen cover then it's really not worth breaking into a sweat over. If you haven't got screen cover then you're still knackered and going to have to pay for it anyway as there's no proof a chip wasn't there before they started working on it.

When did you notice the crack? Straight away after the MOT or 2 miles down the road?
I may not have laughed and walked away but if one of my customers returned claiming I'd broken the screen and not admitted it, I'd also not be looking for the checkbook as these things happen. Sure the tester may have dropped the wiper or similar but there was more than likely a chip there that manifested itself at or on leaving the test station.
Giving them a bad review sounds really rather petty seeing as they may not even be responsible for the crack.

I am normally keen to place responsibility where it lies, but in this case you just don't know what was there before. As others say, XS and move on.

I am up north, but I work for a nationwide insurer.

As you'll know, being "Glassman" the newer cars can be a little more but our main outlay is having to pay for the rain sensors etc in new cars being calibrated at the dealer. The fitting and buying of glass isn't the expensive part. Unfortunately for your industry.
Bulk buying, or Average Invoice Value in a contract or preferred supplier scenario is not indicative of the true cost of supplying and fitting a windscreen.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'having to pay for rain sensors' though.

i thought i might just have to suck it up. i dont trust the garage at all, and the owners attitude was awful. i'll have to get some petty revenge through negative reviews online and suffer the £155 loss (to add on to the £800 or so i've already spent on the car this month...)
Just sounds to me like running costs are getting ahead of you.

Maybe sell if for something easier on the pocket.

I afraid these things happen.

Years ago my Grandads windscreen cracked while it was parked in his garage, we heard it & nobody was in there with it.

£100 or so XS & move on.

As others say, post a bad review, tell him he's a cock & get your retest elsewhere.

We've all had screens go overnight. Put the garage on your sh*t list, by all means tell him he's a prick, by all means post negative feedback on the web.
+1
What am I missing here?

Three of you saying windscreens can crack all on their own with nobody near them but OP should leave a stty review of the garage and tell the owner he's a cock anyway, even though he has no proof of how it happened? scratchchin

Chips become cracks when the vehicle is lifted.
This happened to me a couple of years ago , car tested ok but had a small chip at the bottom of the screen when I took it , tester noted it but it was ok , by the end of the test it was a crack , next day it was straight up the screen .
I put it down to jacking the car up , there's not much they can do about it .
