I have disliked the breed for many, many years. My wife chooses and buys her own cars but we go to the dealerships together. You can probably guess where this conversation is going. Recently she made an appointment with BMW dealer to test drive a new 5 Series with a credit card at the ready (so to speak). Salesman knew nothing about advantages or comparisons with E Class Merc. Just kept saying beemer was better but not why. Now waiting for Disco5 instead. And we would have bought on the day if only he had taken one millisecond to listen to us.
The fact that you were dealt with by a poor salesman doesn't make a BMW a (necessarily) bad choice.

Neither does it mean that a Disco5 (shudder) will be a good choice.

You were dealt with by a incompetent salesman. No more, no less.

Don't punish yourselves by buying the wrong car.

I was at a Volvo dealership earlier in the month. They had a pre registered V60 on a 66 plate for sale.

I guess that hadn't been registered for 90 days? Or does the car have to be on stock for 90 days before they can sell (not registered)?

I bought a pre reg Porsche 911 in 2010 , I remember the discussion with the salesman trying to convince me it was a new car I was buying , he wouldn't back down on the fact my name would be second in the log book and technically it was a second hand car .

We went round in circles for a few minutes before I convinced him I was right .

I did buy it about ten minutes later.
Now that's a sales tactic!

Have a look at what I have written 4 posts up.

However it may be up for sale, but they may not let you take it until it has hit 90 days.

If a pre registered car is registered to the dealer or manufacturer and it is also a current model then it can't be sold for 90 days,
Who says?

I don't actually know who set the rules, it isn't the manufacturer, if you Google it you will find plenty of discussions about it but not who has set it in place.

Even our sales alerts have it printed at the bottom, warning us of the rule.

I'll try and find out more on Monday.

Few years back i went to the local VW dealers in Stoke with my non car savvy cousin look for a nearly new Polo.We did the usual browsing the forecourt and looking through the window routine when the click clacking of a pair of size nine sh*tflickers emitted from the showroom followed by the beaming plastic faced salesman. I informed him we had seen a car we were very intersted in, a Polo 5 door with alloys and a few extras, in black. We were told that it had been sold that day but " i can get you one just like it ".

Ok fine we agree and i then enquire if they could perchance find me a mk 5 gti in candy white. I really really wanted one and... "Sorry they didn't make them in white". Now i am quite sure they did as i had seen several and told him so but he insisted no. Never made them in white. He still insisted when i was showing him pictures on the internet of them !! I gave up and we left agreeing to return the following week to look at the Polo.

A week goes by and we turn up. Different saleman. We tell him we are here to look at a Polo that had been arranged for us. We go to the rear and there it is.

It's red..
It's a 3 door..
It has fking wheel trims !!

We walked off.

It is difficult for dealerships to employ and retain good staff these days as the pay structures are generally poor and the hours long and anti social

There are good dealers and bad and I think it's a mix of culture and people.

Switched to a Lexus recently and found the dealership I dealt with utterly pleasant to deal with as was another I tried whilst one other was horrific simply because the salesman was trying too hard and was dishonest.

That is the crux of the issue and hence why I'm relaxed about lack of product knowledge - but they should allow them to be normal people!!, (I'm the OP so referencing back to my original points)

This just highlights that there are good and bad sales 'people', wherever you are and whatever product you're after. Lexus have an excellent reputation but my only experience wasn't 'text book'. Was offered a test drive, but as I didn't have my DL with me, it was arranged for the following day, with another member of staff as the original salesman would be day off. At closing time I was called to be told that the car wouldn't be available the following day. Nothing else offered, no follow up.

I put it down to an inexperienced salesman, not Lexus being useless. It still seems a funny way to go about trying to sell something, though.

Exactly, though it does seem to be more of a recurring theme with some marques than others.
