I'm the other way around, I could live with the poor mpg (and oil usage) but reckon the 'quirky' engine characteristics - rebuild worries/flooding if you start or stop it the wrong way - would sap the enjoyment out of it.
Don't turn it off when cold, keep on top of oil levels, and give it an old fashioned Italian tune up on the regular, it'll be alright Truckosaurus said:

If the engine is healthy, you don't need to treat an RX8 rotary much different than a normal performance engine. Keep the oil topped up, make sure it's warm before ragging it, and premix he fuel, not much else in it.Truckosaurus said:

Ive always fancied an RX8. The wonky reliability I could handle but the 20mpg... Oooft....

Great drive, and a good buy as a weekend car if you confident to repair anything,
mine became difficult to start. Turned out to be coil packs, when replaced mpg rose from 14 to 22 (whoo hoo) but had me worrying so much I part ex'ed it.

Different type of 'reputation' but I have a guilty yearning for big diesel pickups with straight through exhausts, the more black and chrome the better, would need to get limo tints all around though because it would be someone embarrassing to be seen in by people you know xD.
the rx8s are dirt cheap nowadays too. there was one for sale at the used car dealer opposite the end of my street for 2 grand a couple months back.Different type of 'reputation' but I have a guilty yearning for big diesel pickups with straight through exhausts, the more black and chrome the better, would need to get limo tints all around though because it would be someone embarrassing to be seen in by people you know xD.

Not that it should be a problem for an enthusiast, but I'd suggest that the bolded bit is significantly different from almost every other performance engine. To be honest, if I was using one daily, the whole premixing thing would probably begin to get on my t*ts.Edited by C70R on Friday 28th October 13:35

I would love a 996 as a daily drive but the bad reputation they have for RMS, IMS and bore scoring means that I would pass unless there was a nice mint one that had all the issues resolved.
Massively overblown on the internet which sadly put's off many would be owners from experiencing a wonderful car.Had mine for over 7yrs now, longest I've owned any car (by a big margin) in nearly 30yrs of car ownership.

Tbh I don't think premixing is really necessary, just the correct oil, or get the unit that allows the injected oil to be different from the engine oil, then some better quality oil can be used to look after the bearings, while injecting burnable oil to lubricate the chambers without leaving damaging deposits to gum up the sliding tip seals.Edited by C70R on Friday 28th October 13:35
Also, it seems to benefit from using the full revs, keeps the chambers cleaner
This is my top 5 list of cars I want to own before I die:
Aston. I woned one, they can be crippling cost. I want another
Range Rover classic rust, unreliability etc
Lancia Fulvia Coupe: rust, unreliability
Lotus Esprit: no Rust! reliability, though..
Porsche 911: engine rebuilds, questionnable handling on early models, questionnable reliability on latter models.

Clio 197. Fantastic cars but well known for syncromesh problems and the timing belt costing a fortune to replace.
Bought a low miles one. Never thought of the belt needing done by age not miles. My local Renault Dealer relieved me of £888 for the belt, dephaser pulley and water pump (no good indies near me)
One month later, the synchro went in 3rd gear.
Sold at a significant loss
