I'm currently paying £170 for RAC Relay family cover (4 people)

However since I sold my TVR 15 yrs ago I've never needed it, how much are people being charged if they have basic cover to then be relayed if required ?

I'm aware there are many other breakdown companies but the same question applies.

I have heard of it costing hundreds as you get charged by the mile.

For the yellow vans you'll get charged a pro rata surcharge for upgrading to relay (between £70-140) which get's you 50 miles. On above the 50 miles it's charged at £2.50 per mile.

Have a look at some of the cheaper services - GEM, AutoAid - they offer a pay-and-reclaim option.

I like going with either the AA or RAC and I am happier knowing that if my wife were to breakdown. It should be a familiar looking van coming to her aid.

So each year i swap from one to the other using Quidco. Which makes it often less than half price after your cash back.

Maybe try that?

Me and my wife are a bit less sensitive about what colour van turns up - the last couple of times I used the AA, they had sub-contracted my recovery anyway.

I renewed with Start Rescue with nation wide relay for 2 cars for about £66 (doesn't include home start, or personal cover though).

However, green flag were doing a deal that gave out 2 x personal cover when purchasing breakdown cover for a vehicle - about £100 for 2 vehicles.

I had to pay for a tow from the AA temporarily. Was about £75 for 17 miles. They refunded that the next day when I was able to have words...

We had seperate cover for our last trip to France. Car broke down on the way home. I don't know exactly how much they spent but they...

Towed the car to a yard. Then to a garage on the monday. They then towed the car to a different garage so that it could be diagnosed this year. They then fixed the car (45 euro air pipe).

They also: arranged for taxi from hotel to station. Train tickets x 3 from Le Mans to Paris Charles de Gaulle. Plane tickets x 3 from CDG to Doncaster. Taxi back home. And hire car for 2 days while car in France.

As they fixed it there, they also paid for... Train Doncaster to Manchester, Plane, Manchester to CDG. Train CDG to Le Mans. Taxi to Hotel. Hotel. Taxi to Garage. Crossing Calais to Dover.

Good value for the £75 premium.

Just use Autoaid £42 per annum for full cover. We've used them a few times without issue.
