Vauxhall just because they are made by GM. Tbh I think GM belongs in the council thread even if they do make chevrolets and cadillacs.

(disclaimer, I own 2 GM saab vectras.)
Yeah, sorry to disappoint, but Vauxhall are now French, which means in 5-10 years time they'll be nothing more than a modern Peugeot/Citroen in a frock.

Most car companies are nowadays owned by others. Rolls are owned by BMW, and they're producing their best ever models, as in illustration. I still consider them a British company.

Surely it depends on the era and model comparison?

80s Astra better than 80s Escort

90s Focus better than 90s Astra

Etc...

We have 2 Fords and 1 Vauxhall in our family and prior to that had an Audi and VW so are well placed to comment. Admittedly the newest of our 3 is now nearly 8 years old so not representative of current cars.

Anyway, all are perfectly competent cars. The Fords have nicer steering feel and I think handle better, but to be fair an Insignia vs Fiesta MK6 ST and Gen 1 Ford Ka comparison isn't fair on the Insignia, big old bus that it is.

The Insignia feels as well screwed together as my old B5.5 Passat which was built like a tank. What lets it down is the slightly cheap feeling of the interior plastics. As it nears 100,000 miles it feels as tight or if not tighter to drive as my Passat and is holding together better than my Mk1 Audi A3 did at 65,000 miles.

So for me a lot of it is sheer badge snobbery and many of the people on here who hate Vauxhalls (or Fords) so much are basing their experiences on cars they owned 15 or 20 years ago which isn't really fair as things move on!! The new Gransport Insignia is a lovely looking car IMO and is winning Auto Express comparison tests very regularly against competent stuff like the Skoda Superb. The Ford Fiesta regularly wins group tests too, so both makes produce decent cars these days.

I agree that Fords have superior handling to Vauxhall, but don't play down that they do handle. The Insignia recently looked after S on the (wet) M1, when she was confronted by an utter cock socket reversing for a junction in lane 1. She had to brake hard and swerve at a speed starting with an 8, a scenario which could well have resulted in a loss of control.

It took it in its stride, and her and the car lived to see another day. That to my mind doesn't make it a bad handling car.

BMW don't own Rolls Royce, they license the name from Rolls Royce PLC, it seems like a minor difference until you think about Rolls Royce Aerospace and Rolls Royce Marine Power.

As for the car manufacturer, I heard from a former employee that the new (since late 2000's) German CEO demands that all staff do the "heel click" salute when entering his office or when meeting him in passing. Not very British......

That sounds like an improvement then!

Not for the fat, unwashed & tattooed who unable to stop breeding enjoy a fat monthly cheque from HMG & need a glorified van with carpets to haul the detritus of their lives around. As seen at Tesco's & Butlins car parks, never washed & with a myriad of dents & scratches.

What is it that makes them so dreadful?

Glad to hear the Insignia and Sarah escaped unscathed.

I gave up with Ford around 2002, had enough Vauxhall rental cars to cross those off the list. I find these brands always compromise something important such as driving position or seat comfort.

I suspect PCP finance is probably why they have survived..

Not really. The opposite is true.

PCP has resulted in the decline of Vauxhall Ford etc at the expense and inexorable rise of the German brands being Audi BMW Mercedes etc. That's why their perceived exclusivity and 'premium' status scratchchin of these once great German marques still chased by every man and his dog who wants to put one on their driveway thinking they are impressing the neighbours is top comedy

Not sure about that, the current mondeo has the single most comfortable car seats I’ve ever sat in, better than volvo even.

I like my Astra.

It has no rattles, is very well equipped, goes like stink, is economical, was well priced.

I would probably like Focus too.

The Griff hardly gets a look in these days.

That is about as ridiculous a comment as you could possibly get on this whole ridiculous thread.

I suppose he has a small moustache too and a swastika tattoo.

Very true. We had a 17 plate loaner when I crashed the Insignia, well, when I was crashed in to. It was one area which the Ford had our Vauxhall spanked.
