RM Auctions 'Duemila Ruote' auction preview

More than 430 cars, 150 bikes, 60 boats and much more going to auction, all without reserve...

Now this promises to be a special one, even by RM's standards. The Duemila Ruote (2,000 wheels) auction was first confirmed around the London sale, and with the auction now a couple of weeks off, it's worth going into some more detail. Because not only is it an incredible collection of cars (and more), every single lot in the sale is without a reserve.

It's a private collection that also includes 150 bikes, 60 boats and 140 bicycles; we'll focus on the cars here, but the full lot list it worth a look if you're intrigued. And have a lot of time.

Italian cars dominate, with particular highlights including a works Delta Integrale rally car, a Maserati MC12, an early (alloy-bodied) Ferrari 275 GTB/6C and a manual 599. But that's just the start, with a selection of Lancia Fulvias, a Fiat Dino, a Maserati Kyalami and a smorgasbord of Alfa Romeos also to be sold, including three racing 75s.

In fact motorsport is a strong running theme in the Duemila auction. There are Escorts and Sierras, a rally-spec Porsche Cayman, a March 90C Indianapolis, a Group 4 Abarth 131 and a Mustang Notchback racer just for starters. Seriously, if Monday is getting to you already, this is the place to look.

RM has identified 60 different 911s (including some very nice RS and GT variants) on top of 21 Jaguar E-Types in addition. The auction has been described as an "Aladdin's Cave", which rather seems to sell the lot list short!

With so many cars being sold, the catalogue descriptions are either brief or missing at the moment (but in for the PH ads!) and the estimates are comically low; expect both to be addressed over the coming days. Until then there are plenty of pictures to ogle and lotto garages to plan!

See the full list of cars here.

what's the story with all these cheap old 911s? I take they'll need a ton of money to restore, but some of the race cars?

also this?

It's not just the 911s that seem cheap; just about everything seems to have been valued on the low side.

"It's a private collection"

Streuth, did the guy keep pressing the "Buy it Now" button instead of "Watch"?

Wow!
That's a hell of a collection, nice to see some cars showing some actual use rather than pristine garage queens.
I don't understand buying more than one of the same model though.

Which one would one pick if one could only pick one?

Bet they all make far in excess of their estimates.

That's probably the issue he had - couldn't decide so went for loads!

Wow, unmolested unmodified Delta HF4WD, Integrale 8V, 16V and Evo all together in one place. That really is something.

I think (as has been said) the estimates are low. GT2 racer should fetch many times this I would think!

Of course. Remember this is RM, from that TV programme a while back where the shouty cockney and his american sidekick "restored" an E-type from scrap aprts, reversed an engine into it, dropped a windscreen etc. RM didnt spot any of these and gave it a "professional" estimate.

Does no reserve mean it starts at £1 and goes up, or starts at a baseline figure? (as presumably that means reserve but in another sense?)

The form is that they'll suggest a price, usually high and then work down until someone says ok. Example this weekend, 1999 Daimler V8 at ACA.

"where shall we start this? £2000?"

"Ok, do I see £1000 anywhere?"

"Alright, you tell me, £500?"

At that point 10 hands go up and we get bidding underway

and yes, you should probably ignore most of the estimates, some of them are hilariously low.

It is actually a sale on behalf of the Italian Government who seized the collection for unpaid taxes and other debts.

I believe some of the cars have been standing unused for a very long time and judging by some of the comments about the sale on Ferrarichat some of the cars have a somewhat questionable provenance.
