I deeply enjoy the contrast between dirty and clean areas when cleaning a mucky car. This was just 150 miles of driving!

Exactly why I'm not bothering at the moment! Clean it and 10 miles later it's filthy again.

Yeah because you don't see your plate is dirty when you go out to the car in the morning do you. Clean it before you leave.
I'm fine with it filthy thanks.

A week of early starts, late finishes. The last thing I'm concerned about is some over zealous copper.

But an over zealous Plod could mean a later start or an even later finish! confused

The coppers aren't being over zealous confused You wouldn't be saying that if a loved one was ran over and killed by someone with a filthy plate which was un-readable by CCTV or ANPR.
It takes less than 5 seconds to rub a plate down with an old rag. Do it whilst your car is warming up before setting off.
I'm up at 6 and leave by 6:45. I get home anywhere from 6-8. Every week. It really isn't difficult to give it a once over.

Alternatively you could sit at the side of the road on your commute either being ticketed or forced to clean it by the BIB and be late for work.

My other half uses her SL350 day to day so it gets quite dirty. Thankfully gave it a wash today.

Some reassuring photos of fairly recently cleaned cars here, absolutely filthy again.
I'm quite convinced that not cleaning a car since October has them looking any worse than if I hadn't been so lazy.

Not the dirtiest but for about a week, just look at the salt...

Cleaned the other half car today and she drove no more than 8 miles and it was covered in salt again. Black cars are a pain

We're due some heavy rain tomorrow so hopefully it'll wash off some of the muck and wash most of the salt off the roads.

Good for you, and great dramatisation there.

It hasn't happened in 30 years of driving so i'll carry on just hoping to avoid grumpy coppers, killers with filthy plates...etc

I'm sure if the Police stopped everyone who had dirty rear plates this time of year they wouldn't have time to do anything else.

Some shapes of car with flat rears particularly can get totally blathered easily within 100 miles of setting off. That said it really isn't hard to run a tissue or rag across the rear lights and numberplate every now and again. I'd be more worried the rear lights are completely covered than the plate though.

My poor long suffering wife will tolerate pretty much all my unfathomable car geekery but even she can't believe that I'm spending my evening on the internet staring at stranger's cars that haven't been washed... This she thinks is even more weird that gawping at cars with arches that are wider than normal - which is what I was doing last night.

My Boxster, not used too often but did have a couple of weeks daily before Christmas and blew off the cobwebs today, so many opportunities to clean it but haven't bothered!

The plates are fresher than the dirt hence the black screw caps - now replaced.
