So I have a car up for sale. Guy contacts me from a long way away. Asked all the right questions negotiated a good price for him. I waited for a few weeks for him to get flights etc. Turns up looks round all good then casualy drops in "I've only got £xx now but that's fine isn't it?"

Now £xx is 1k under what we had agreed.

He was genuinely surprised when I said no.

"But I've come miles etc"

Sorry you wasted your time and mine best book your self a flight home.

His face was a picture.

Really can't believe the nerve of some people

Did he cough up the extra £1k or actually book the flight home?

Fairplay to you OP, I would have done the same although imagine most would take the hit.

Years ago someone flew from Germany, got the train to near me and I picked him up from the station. He offered half the asking price, I didn't say a word, just walked to my house and shut the door. He didn't knock or anything and we're pretty rural so no idea how he got home.

Had this tw*t have me deliver a high end bike almost to Bristol. We had negotiated a price a grand below asking. Arrived at the arranged services. He looks at the bike and picks holes in it - silly stuff.
Told him that he either pays the agreed price or I go home. Got £100 towards fuel out of him.
This was after something like a dozen 'phone calls beforehand.
Drove off leaving him there. Total idiot.

Have to admit. As soon as he stepped out of his van, I thought he was a waster. Just felt it.

A tad extreme?

I did this also. Chap took offence in my case but left after he was ignored.

Yeah it was, could have at least offered 3/4.

1989 - me selling a S4 Lotus Elan DHC. Car advertised in Classic Car with all faults listed (front chassis leg corroded).
Two guys turn up with a trailer, names I recognised from the magazine staff list, the day before the issue was due out.
Offered me well below asking price.
Turn them down, they get really shirty about how they are doing me a favour and come a long way with a trailer.
Off they go ringing base to see if there is anything else in the area for sale.

I had something similar many years ago when I was selling my old modified 306 Cabriolet. The lad came down on a Saturday and wanted to take it off my hands there and then but still knock at least £1500 off the asking price. I told him that wasn't happening and he either paid the asking price, or made a much closer offer to it as we'd previously discussed on the phone.

He obviously thought I was going to cave in as he made a point of mentioning how he'd come down to me, in Surrey, from Nottingham on a one way train ticket that cost him £150 odd and took ages due to changing trains on the way down. When he refused to budge on his offer I advised him that he'd better start walking back to the station quickly, or call a taxi to get him there, as the longer he left it he'd find himself stuck in London until Monday as services back to his were due to end in a few hours time ready for the overnight and through Sunday engineering works hehe

I turned up with £30 short. The buyer said NO. We ended up driving to the nearest cashpoint for the £30. I'd bloody spent it on to way that day.

id do exactly the same. just sold my car and everyone wants to do a deal over the phone, but you just know that when they actually come view the car they'll pick holes in it and the price will go down again.

i'd politely tell them to jog on if they offer me a penny less than we agreed on the phone, they've the ones that have travelled for 3 hours on 4 trains and a bus to get to my place, i've just crawled out of bed and chucked on some clothes. no skin off my nose if they dont buy it, i'll just walk back inside my house while they sort out getting themselves home again.

I bought a convertible car right in the depths of winter - fast forward 8 months I put the car for sale on the forum I bought it from.

I priced the car higher than what I had bought it for. The person who originally sold it to me then proceeded to threaten me with court action unless I paid him 50% of the difference that I was 'making'. He felt I had defrauded him.

I told him to foxtrot oscar - he then proceeded to do malicious posts to try to put any potential buyers off. Luckily one of the forum guys couldn't give two hoots and came up to have a look and then buy the car - the icing on the cake being said buyer the did a glowing report on his experience in dealing with me !

Some people are semi-psychotic !!!
