I can give you pretty much the opposite of this.........

I was selling a bike, via an MCN advert.
Guy calls, sounds sensible, asks the right questions and then says that he'll be with me in 6 hours.
He arrives in a taxi, dressed in leathers, carrying a crash helmet, having flown from Belfast to Heathrow.
No hint of a haggle. Just pays and rides away.
Perfect.
Every single car and bike ive sold in france has been exactly the same (20 odd of each) apart from a C6 vette, totally gobsmacked at how easy it is to sell a good example of a car in France, no haggling whatsoever, even had one guy buy me lunch, many coffees bought for me to, unbelievably easy compared to UK experiences.
Same here in Australia. Always fairly straightforward.

Not sure why the UK is full of clowns.

got fed up with the usual texts when we were selling the VXR..

txt: "what is the lowest you'd take?"

me: "what is the highest you'd pay..?"

always closes them down smile

i would also manage expectations of buyers on the phone, telling them in no uncertain terms, "please do not attempt to haggle on the price, if you are planning on bringing less than the asking price you will be leaving without a car"

Ended up selling it to WBAC, got £400 less than it was up for privately but soooo much less grief !

I went on Gumtree......

Cue the deluge of texts. 95% of the texts were numerical texts: "80", "50", "100", "£90"..
This came up the other day, apparently there is an option for buyers to make an offer and gumtree just forwards the number without saying it's an offer.

Always been this way on the used car market. Knock the sellar down as much as possible however you can, then sell for more profit. The 'I've only got xxx, take it or leave it' is just another tactic. Wouldn't surprise me if the OPs buyer had a few other cars locally to go and see.

In my experience, the dodgier the dealer, the more of this thing you'll find.

Had a couple of the 'i'll give you x amount' over the years. Sometimes it has suited me to take the offer, sometimes not. Simarilly, I've done the same, but always with dealers. Had some very good deals from dealers I'd put in the dodgy category just by offering them a silly price and walking away. Helps if you do it at the end if the month. If I'm buying privately, I'll either pay what's asked as I think the item is worth it, or walk away.

I put all this type of thing down to part of the fun when buying and selling cars. It's mostly just a business transaction, and not really something to get wound up by - you win some, lose some. Some of the sentiment on here goes a long way to explaining the rise of WBAC though. I've always found them a pain to deal with and usually well short of what I've sold the car for.

I had an unfortunate experience while trying to sell my exs pug 107 years ago.

Car was in decent condition, below average mileage, no faults, was a nice clean little car. Trade in value we were offered 2200 by main dealer. Private they were going for over 3k. So I list it for 3k with intention of taking closest to that i could get, we were already trading it in so anything extra would have been a bonus.

I advertise it on local forums and not long after get a call from a man saying he is looking to buy a car for his daughter. He asks a few simple questions and arranges to come see the car.

Wife was out (luckily) so I dealt with it. Anyway, I was expecting some bloke and his daughter, what I got was 2 scruffy pieces of st getting out of an old BMW, day in gob... Just vile.

Anyway they both start absolutely tearing the car to pieces. And I mean been so so critical. You would think they were buying a Ferrari from a main dealer, not a 5 year old 107. Ooo this will need doing, my daughter would want it perfect, no marks anywhere.

They then turn round and go... Book price is 2 grand trade, I will give you that now cash, you won't get any more.

I said no thank you, repeated my asking price. They were both very rude and aggressive (I was only young at time, about 22, bit wet behind ears), it got them no where. I locked the car and repeated my price. They turned around shouting, "fking wasting our time", get in their rust bucket and shoot off.

My instant thought was that they are two dodgy part time traders, trying to rip me off.

I'm currently trying to sell my parents runabout for them, a £250 Corsa C.

I have had all sorts of offers, ranging from, £40, an xbox, and phones, to, and I quote, "wona swap for some bacca, got difrent brands"

I'm slowly losing the will to live.
To be fair. An Xbox is an excellent deal for a corsa. I'd have bit his arm off.

Yep and you can see why that'd work too(your comment on your other half as you noted) How many owners are intimidated and giving in.

I recall selling a car a few years ago, it was bought as a stop gap until another car had been off the road for a few months being rebuilt and painted, Car is advertised for £2000 id had for around 6months, would of happily accepted £1700 for it.
Had a few of the text messages "best price etc", one guy numerous phone calls, texts, emails... all seemed good at this point, arranges a viewing, looks around happy with condition etc test drive fine all good, asks about price its the usual its advertised at £2k, any sensible offer in that region and its yours, Guy offers £1800... all good at this point.

So we go in the house, I start getting paperwork out, ask him how is he paying, ..... erm... ermm... he says Im going on holiday for 2 weeks, then I get paid 2 weeks after that, so i can only pay you in 4 weeks thats still ok isnt it??? ........ The look of shock on his face when I said well actually no it isnt, unless your leaving a deposit healthy enough to justify it then no, if its still for sale in 4weeks by all means but right now based on that NO.

On the other hand had one strange experience funnily enough with the same car (guy above left without car), a lady came to view the car, explains that she has split up with her husband a week ago and needed a car sharpish was local to me literally less than 1/2 a mile away, looks around the car happy with it all, says can i leave £500 deposit (friday night) and ill bring the rest the following wednesday, at this point I agree (approx 25% deposit), .. Wednesday comes i call to discuss collection times, to which she says "My husband and I have sorted our issues out, keep the money, he shouldnt of been a W****R with me"....

Point blank refused to take any money back.....

Result Car Sold in the end for £1800 in total i received £2300.

Rare case I know but from one extreme to the other.

My dad is selling an old Rover 416 runabout at the moment. A friend of a friend of his came round to have a look at it.

This guy had no money on him at all. He offered to take it off his hands and sell it for him as my dad is a bit incapacitated at the moment due to illness.

Yeah right.

Perhaps these people that supposedly travel miles to see a car and then make a stupidly low offer are actually from just around the corner?
Unlikely unless they intentionally want to put themselves on the back foot for any negotiations.

I wouldn't necessarily walk away from someone who made a stupidly low first offer. You've got to start somewhere and there's nothing wrong with being a bit cheeky. After that it would quickly become obvious if you can have a deal.

If Mike Brewer can get a Boxster S for £1000 there's hope for the rest of us.

Last year I offered £7500 for a Nissan Silvia S15 that was up for £9000, was flat refused and that was that.

It sold a few months later after having a new mot requiring a few bits including a couple of shocks and also had some lacquer damage sorted. He can't have made much if any more than the £8000 I would have gone to.

Not to forget the age of the owner, if selling the car, one has to assume they were at least old enough to drive it 107 years ago!

Selling my car recently - some idiot rings at midnight and offers 40% below the asking price. Honestly, what did he think I was going to say?
