Went through something similar trying to sell an E63 recently. Ended up doing a sale or return with a local garage and getting £2k more than I'd been offered privately.

The poster said that underneath the paint that somebody didn't like, the wheels are made of wood:
"Some of the reasons for making reduced offers are laughable - one was that the wheels were painted.... if you wanted to strip them and have them bare wood it wouldnt cost you 5k lol..."

I had an unfortunate experience while trying to sell my exs pug 107 years ago.
were pugs even out 107 years ago?
Not to forget the age of the owner, if selling the car, one has to assume they were at least old enough to drive it 107 years ago!
I`ll get my coat! smile
I bet his ex is a bit of a babe wink

So I have a car up for sale. Guy contacts me from a long way away. Asked all the right questions negotiated a good price for him. I waited for a few weeks for him to get flights etc. Turns up looks round all good then casualy drops in "I've only got £xx now but that's fine isn't it?"

Now £xx is 1k under what we had agreed.

He was genuinely surprised when I said no.

"But I've come miles etc"

Sorry you wasted your time and mine best book your self a flight home.

His face was a picture.

Really can't believe the nerve of some people
What's weird about this and similar stories is that the guy has traveled miles and has spent a significant amount to get there, you're at home, and yet he's thinks he has a strong negotiating position.

Once had an Irish lad call up for one of my enclosed race car trailers...

"If you bring it down to Appleby I will give you £X (half the asking price) for it today. I am going back to Ireland tomorrow so cant drive up to Newcastle"
I replied that there was no way I was bringing it down to a layby in appleby for him - even at the FULL asking price.
Later that evening I get another call saying that he will be over in half an hour to view the trailer.
A 4x4 turns up and he is all over the trailer before even coming to the door, so I go out.
"ahh, well its just too small for what I want, but I'll give you £X ( half the asking price) for it now and take it away.. I need a quick decision as I have to catch a ferry to Ireland soon"
I replied that the trailer wasnt for sale at such a ridiculous price.
He then started asking me to sell him my new enclosed trailer that I had just bought a week previously to replace the smaller on I was selling - but at the same price he had offered me for the 10 year older and smaller one...
At this point I told him I was going in for my dinner and wished him good luck with his search for an enclosed trailer.
He sat in his 4x4 across the road from my house until about 1am ( I was watching him whilst sitting watching TV) , at which point I went out and put the hitch locks on both trailers - within 5 mins he was gone....

I filter a lot of potential purchasers, it won't go down well on here but in essence I'd tell the following types my car is sold even if it's not :

- when calling use of words like bruv
- people who text with things like mates
- geography, if you're from West Yorkshire or Liverpool forget it
- accent, hard for me to be too harsh on here but there is a demographic I won't sell to based on my previous experience
- people who sound like council estate chavs
- people who ask ridiculously anal questions relative to the car being sold

It can be viewed as harsh and stereotyping but saved me a lot of time since doing this!
Was selling my sister's tatty Honda. A guy that meets some of the above criteria insists on coming that evening. Given it was raining and very dark I tried to dissuade him but failed. He travelled 80 miles with his mate. I got the impresion he fancied himself as a bit of a trader and said he was going to do the car up. Looked it over and asked if he and his mate could test drive it. I said no and then he said he would leave his cash wad for the full amount as security! They drove off and returned 20 mins later and knocked me down £130 to £795. Had he waited until the next day he would have spotted cigarette burns in the back seats and a cracked windscreen. We were happy with price and to be rid of the car.

A few years ago I was selling a relatively rare sports car - fewer than 200 built and these days they can be quite sought after. They don't come up for sale very often so buyers who want one have to act quickly.
The one I was selling had all the usual model specific foibles sorted, it was a good spec and had a handful of desirable extras included.

However, it was no longer wanted so it went in the classifieds but at a very reasonable price and many marque commentators agreed that it would make an exceptional buy for its next owner. None of this prevented a deluge of offers, suggestions of unsuitable and unwanted part exchanges or "best price" idiots from contacting me - none of whom had actually bothered to view the car in person.
Had they turned up and appraised it I may have entertained an offer for a hassle free sale, but some got really shirty when I declined their online or phonecall based offer. I suppose they would either have been timewasters or happy to wait six or twelve months for another example to reach the market.

The eventual buyer heard of it via word of mouth and recommendations. He paid the full asking price without bothering to try to haggle.

Another:
Had a couple turn up to view the TVR I was selling a few years ago, got out of their car, (they'd travelled all of 4 mile) and after a cursory glance over the car, she went back to theirs and came back with two insulated cups of coffee(?) for him and her.
He went over car with a fine tooth comb, I took him out for a test drive, got back home and he comes out with "you're not going to let me drive it then?"
"Not unless you've got proof of insurance" I say.

"Well I'm not going to make you an offer" he replies and storm off

I had the same nonsense once. A bloke looking to buy my old Honda 125 got in touch and said he could come up to Northumberland from somewhere down south, in a couple of hours. I wanted £700, but agreed to £650 over the phone. That was as low as I would go in person, so I told him that subject to his approval, he could have the bike for that amount.

He turned up with a rather unimpressed looking wife and child later than evening and I wheeled the bike onto my drive for him to look at. After much chin scratching and sucking air over his teeth, he said "I'll give you £400 for it" I was letting the bike go cheap at £650, so I declined. He countered by begging, saying he only had £400 on him. I told him that he couldn't afford the bike, and wheeled it back into my garage. He looked despondent, before getting back in the car with his furious looking wife.

Whether or not he actually had the full asking, I'll never know! The bike sold a week later.

i had a guy drive from the netherlands with a trailer and a suitcase of cash try and pull the same trick. He got sent away too.
I imagine he had a few cars on his list, made silly offers for the ones he wasn't too bothered about. When you say no he'll just head to the next one!
it was a single car trailer, and it took a long time to get rid of him. He really laid it on thick about having driven so far etc. To be fair the car i was selling was a trophy-winning TVR. I doubt he was non-plussed about it, but i admire your attempts to bring me down a peg or two. Very British.

I have had a father, brothers vs other son fight over a car I was selling. He had dragged his whole family out twice to see it and then said i need to go home to get a deposit - at this point his entire family flipped and said why do you keep wasting this guys and our time etc.

His father then proceeded to apologise to me on his sons behalf - bizarre day!

Well you can't change your family. They probably knew he was a bit of an arse, but still.... family.

I'm in Glasgow and was selling my sisters car, think it was a 59'plate but can't remember Peugeot 107

Guy from Leeds phones asking me the usual stuff, mileage condition etc.

He then begins to tell me that 107's are his favourite car and he has had loads of them, which had alarm bells ringing making me think he was a dealer, but I continue to entertain him, he then asks me when was the last service and I tell him it had just been done, he replies "can you take the price of the service off the car I don't think your service was a proper one"

At this point I know the guys a trader and is at it.

By the end of the phone call he had diagnosed that the car:
Needed a service
Needed a new gearbox
Needed 4 new tyres

He then offered to do me a favour and take it off my hands for £800 it was up for £2000! The car had no faults apart from a few scratches on the paintwork
