After my failed attempt to view this car last Sunday, it's been relisted. It's a E350 estate.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201783645962?_trksid=p20...

Seller emailed last night with the following....so far I've resisted gloating and I told you so, type emails.
"Hi,
I held the car for a week and can you believe it that joker didn't show up.
Anyway car is still available if it's not too late. "
On a slightly related note, the vendor claimed she'd taken a holding deposit prior to taking it off the ebay. Would one assume that they've now lost that deposit?

I am interested in it but don't fancy driving over 200 miles to view it, particularly as I think it's a bit on the pricey side. Are there any beards/threadists in thew Brighton area who'd like to go and have a nosey of it?
I can't help you with viewing but I have to say: "My! That really is a gorgeous looking car!" If I were in the market for a new barge I'd be seriously tempted by that...even if it is a Mercedes! (I'm still in rehab after a previous Merc experience a while back...but making progress)

Emily really knows how to take a picture too!?
Preface lift car at post-facelift price. For my money, go for one with higher miles and half the price for pre-facelift or same money post-facelift. With this one you have inflated bork potential without the cheapness offering the insurance of a warchest.
This also caught my eye. Very good looking car. I am interested. What do you think is going on with the rear foldaway seats in the boot.?Don't seem to sit correctly and no headrests? Is the load cover also broken and held in place by the seat belts or am I being paranoid? Long way to go for me if it is not right.

The rearmost seats look suspiciously knackered considering the low mileage. The headrests are hard to replace, iirc they are only available from the factory in one colour (I forget which) and are disproportionately expensive. Breakers just don't have them, when I was looking (because I was considering a car with one missing headrest from the boot) a few people said that all of those bits are hoarded for those trying to assemble bits to sell as a 7 seat retro-fit kit which makes sense.
They aren't set-up right there, there is a flap on the load cover which should be flipped up, the seatbacks then sit a fraction further back and lock into place.
I'm not tempted at all by this example.

Thank you.certainly some food for thought. I have emailed the seller who assures me that there is no damage and that the seats are in good order. I think it is probably too much of a gamble as I am not local for a quick inspection but I do like the spec and colour combo. Decisions decisions......

Neither Techno nor Daytona, it is Mora; lovely on an E39, nice on some E46's but stunning on an E38.

Evening all,
whilst idly browsing the DVLA pages earlier, I noticed that the timed auction (Beginning next Monday - 23rd Jan) has possibly the ultimate BMW-based thread plate.

E39 BMW (lot #430).

While in general, i don't like the idea of "private" plates (although #516 appeals for some reason wink), surely that (the BMW one) must go to a discerning owner?

I'm curious as to the expected overall auction cost though - I'd suspect north of 3k?

Will keep tabs on it if anyone's interested...

I agree with this. The safety question asked is a very sensible one: the answer I guess is, how safe is safe enough? - which is very much a personal judgement.

There is a substantial difference in crash worthiness between older cars. Some really do qualify for the label 'death trap' - and some are pretty safe, though not as safe as a fully modern car. I too would be happy to use a W126 Mercedes whose safety record was for its time exemplary - but would feel nervous of the crashworthiness in the Lotus. It would not stop me riding in one, but it would stop me buying one - and I would be reluctant to take children in it. I would have no qualms taking a child in a W126 - or my XJ40.
[snip]

I thought it would be interesting to repost it since we are discussing safety of big Mercs and old Jags in the thread after bob-lad's question, though I'm sure not everyone will agree with the study's findings/my grasp of statistics is scant to say the least! smile
Fascinating info. Thank you.

Even the XJ40 was designed to meet the US crash test regulations of the time, so that helps explain the early Jaguar results.

Carry on barging smile

Conundrum. Need a car. Barge or retro? Barge, LS400 floats my boat. Retro, Rover P6?

Something that is both?

There is a rhd Alpina B12 6.0 in Mora hiding somewhere in the UK, with Champagne Contours and a full complement of toys.

Have we had this older W124 from Anglia Car Auctions yet? Perhaps getting past barge and into classic and no estimate but should hit squarely within thread budget. Sadly lacking in green MB Tex but light ivory and the kind of MoT history you'd want to marry your daughter. And if you wait outside Arrivals in it long enough you'll make friends with some Germans mistaking it for a taxi.

This has been knocking round a while. It was hawked by Silverbrook Cars for ages at £3k, then £2.6k. It went into Anglia's August sale and raised £1,150 inc premium. It was then offered by a Norfolk dealer at £3k. And now it's back at Anglia. I suspect it has been cheaply bodged up around the rear wheel arches: we had a good pore over it in the last volume.

Here is the August result: http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auct... And the eBay link to the previous sale: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371675066862

This is what I observed in July:

Mr Anally Retentive said:
The line of the forward half of the arch looks a bit wrong to me; and is that not over-spray on the inside? Looks like it may have been hastily bodged.

I also note, looking at that picture, that the nearside mirror frame is missing a fair bit of paint.

I quite like cloth. I think it is cream-beige and not grey.

There are also a few bumper scuffs and the seats are a bit grubby. That may be nothing or it may be that the photos flatter to deceive. But there is no prospect of me getting down there for a while yet. The more I look at it, the more I think the vendor is pushing his luck a bit. I see there is a hole in the driver's bolster, the wheel trims are all badly scuffed, the boot interior is quite heavily chipped... but the MOT history is sound...

A few pages ago there were concerns that there may not be any decent barges for us in ten years time, but fear not, the grown-ups are still making V8s and V12s, even some without turbos, so we should be OK for at least the next decade smile

However...... in-car Skype & Cortana https://redmondmag.com/blogs/the-schwartz-report/2...
