Since there are a few guys in here with massive Mercedes beards I will shamelessly copy my own port from the Merc forum and ask here aswell.

Asking advice for a friend.

My buddy has just bought an absolutely mint condition 5000 mile 2003 SL55 AMG, with a few small niggles.

1. TPMS Sensors, can these be de-coded? The sensors if bought from the dealer are insanely expansive, so the smart move would be to just de-code it. I'm sure however that there are replacement parts to be had.

2. It has a very small stone chip in the distronic grille, bang smack in the middle of the Mercedes star, and the dealer quoted a simply ridiculous amount of money to replace it. The dealer claimed that just that part can not be changed and one has to replace the entire distronic unit at a cost of almost £4000. That seems somewhat steep.

Any takers?

I agree that Lowtimer's assessment is bang on correct too.

But Krikkit...you had it easy being an '80s child! Being ferried around INSIDE those cars?!?

Being a '60s child, "after licking t'mud off pavement with us tongues" we as kids...after a day out treat walking in the 'countryside' (Farthing Downs, Coulsdon i.e now South London)...if there were too many of us kids, 3 of us would be transported home inside the boot of my parents friend's car...a Vauxhall Victor. I'm not kidding! laugh

I'm laughing now but can you imagine the consequences and carnage of 3 kids locked in the boot if a rear-end collision had occurred? eek

Safety restraints?

We, as a family, didn't have a car until I was about 9-10 years old (nor an inside toilet until I left home at 19 btw). My Mum learnt and her first car was a Triumph Herald that she bought for £50. Regularly on trips, with me sitting, unrestrained in any way in the front seat, she would go around a corner and the passenger door would fly open. yikes

You were lucky! laugh

We used to go on holiday on a mattress in the back of a VW van in 1971-72 , went to bed, got carried to the van , woke up on holiday, it was fantastic

Well apart from the time I woke up in mid air when my dad took evasive action avoiding a crash on the M5
Ah! The Good Ol' Days...when we didn't have a care, eh?! laugh

It's hard to believe that's a Y-reg car. Compare it to a selection of other cars that were available on a Y-reg - it looks a decade or more younger

I would imagine a STAR system could deactivate the TPMS if it's possible, although quite how easy that would be is another matter!

The only thing I could think of for the distronic is trying to find something to fill the chip? A professional plastic repairer might have good luck with it, although I'd be slightly nervous about the repair filler interfering with the radar.

I'm returning to the fold after some work absence then a week skiing in Austria. My only motoring observations that arise are the impressive efficacy of winter tyres, and that the new Volvo S90 - which I saw for the first time - is a magnificent-looking thing and will be a prime barge of the future.

That aside, loving the Lexus buys and temptingly cheap Mercs being posted.

Really liking the new s/v90 too: trying to get one for the Mrs, but looks like it's going to be over budget. Merc E220d it is then.

If the Volvo is out of budget how, surely it'll be in budget within 12 months? The depreciation of the S90 will be nothing less than horrific.

Yes, quite, though I am assured that it was a ghastly rotten 107 before they tinkered with it and inevitably destined for the scrapper in any case.

The S90 doesn't appear to come with any proper engines though - only 4 pot diesels are listed on the volvo website frown

That's a google dealership car - including the previous name of Thornton Car Sales

I've visited their site in the past.

Not with a bargepole.

For anyone who wants a luxury barge:

The Lexus RX300

I sold mine for just £880 today.
It needed a new cambelt, 4 tyres, MOT and Tax but £880! Look at what you'd get for £5000.

Just look at that spec list.

- 2004 (54)
- 52,000 miles
- 3.0 V6 VVT-i engine
- top of the range SE-L model
- Xenon headlights with cornering function.
- Electric tilt and positioning steering wheel
- electric tailgate
- electric sunroof
- electric memory seats with fantastic lumbar support
- Sat nav
- climate control
- tape player (very rare nowadays!).
- Mark levinson premium sound system with 6 cd changer in the dash.
- Reverse camera
- 2 keys
- Full Lexus History
- rear entertainment system
- air suspension
