Volvo is operating in a 2017 market with a 2012 model line-up in my view.
Or should that say - 2012 ENGINE line up? That would be fairer no?
Their engines are some of the most advanced out there, it's just that Volvo UK won't let us have the petrols.

The compressed air lag reduction (powerpulse) on the D5 is very clever tech indeed. Their petrols are similarly clever too, and as noted they have a hybrid version inevitably in the works.

Another 12 months and a petrol will be around over here I'm sure.

The xc90 in t8 polestar form is certainly up to 2017 standards, 415bhp...

Purchased a new barge this week; 2005 BMW 750i sport (e65). Silver with black and around 85k on it. Looks to have some nice options such as soft close and adaptive headlights along with the attractive 20" wheels (need a refurb).

Not seen it or driven it yet, bought blind as is the Thread way. Car is in Norwich and i'm in Bournemouth and too busy with work / family to take a day out to collect so I will probably get it delivered to me once it has been serviced and MOT'd.

Over thread budget but still within the ethos I think. Will post some pics once I have it in my possession.

At 3 large at least the stereo upgrade came within thread budget! yikes
I had a good look at these in Geneva last weekend. I thought they were the best real-world new car. However, the interiors are not up to the standard of Mercedes and BMW. The 3er, 5er and 7er cars and the E- and S-Class cars on display all had well-specified interiors and were leagues ahead of everything else there.

And of course you can't get the Volvo with anything even resembling a nice powertrain.

I see Volvo offers a petrol T6 in America. Shame not here.

I had a good look at them all. The Velar is standard issue Land Rover which, I am afraid to say, doesn't do it for me. Is it a Range-Rovered new Discovery? It certainly looks it. Sure, the materials will be a cut above but it's not very inspirational. Beige swoop of centre console. Lots of buttons. It was tricky to get close to the new Panamera but it really didn't leap out as great. Whereas the Mercs and the BMWs were really, obviously good. I didn't think anything came even close to them. BMW had some superb new 5s and 7s and the new E-Class coupé was very smartly done up inside (and out). Of course, a lot of the trim (especially Merc) was stuff we don't get in the UK market.

Range Rover Sport is £59,500 in 2.2 4 pot trim before you add toys.

I'm not a fan of modern Range Rovers except a proper Range Rover in a proper colour with a light interior, but I have to admit to rather liking the Velar.

It seems somehow a lot less obnoxious than the RRSport, without being very greatly different in any respect.

Very cohesive. As I think you've written already - this is how you do a screen.

How do you handle the styling of a simple black rectangle which you can't style? Put it in a bigger rectangle which you can style. Done.

Don't stick it in an oval or a fanny. Don't surround it with clutter. Don't balance it on top of the air vents.

Yep, that panamera is a cracker. Hope to go for one in about 5 years after the volvo and I'm done with most baby clutter.

Not to mention the small issue of possibly being able to afford it by then! They're hugely expensive!

The Porsche has haptic feedback on the touch-only "buttons" too, clever stuff.

Still think the Volvo looks good next to even those interiors.

ETA: Not a massive fan of the W213, although it's certainly a very nice effort.

You could get very close to that with a 4-cylinder Porsche costing that in 1991/92. 944 Turbo Cab with all the extras.

I think my own coupe was into the forties in 1990.

Conversation veering from ancient old sheddy barges to discussing future hybrid engines and touch-screen multi-gazillion pound car interiors. Thread-delivery.

Despite the appeal of the moderns, I'm still hankering over the 22 year old one-owner 960.

Well it ended at £3k on the nose. To my mind, for that spec and maintenance it was a good deal for someone.

Not really - the problem with this 'touch panel' controls (whether the Porsche style or Tesla 'tablet') are that you cannot find the controls without LOOKING for them.

In older cars, knobs and sliders were findable without looking but haptic feedback won't help you find a button on an otherwise smooth panel (it will only confirm that you pressed SOMETHING)

Progress for the sake of progress - see also keyless entry...
