So a conversation with my Dad ... involving his Brandy collection led me to this --> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/162367859526?clk_rv...

Well it’s certainly in budget! Anyone got any experience of running something like this or a Hyundai XG30 (?) - I’m mildly intrigued!

I would salute you if you purchased this. Come to the next barge meet and park it next to Bob-Lad's old Jag and extol the solid roof, economy and reliability. Please!

A cheap and comfortable way to be miserable.
I'd rather have this one, at least you get a supercharger.

You probably realise that there are only two correct answers and a few potentially correct ones.

Start with a 190 with odd interior or an LS400 and you probably won't go wrong

Ah, nostalgia. There was a time a few years ago when "a good 560SEC" was always the answer, but not now the only sub £5K one is going to be in need of total restoration or use as a spares car.

ermmm, its a 6 speed gearbox in these.
my bad, however they have the same issues re 'lifetime fill' transmission oil, being stipulated by dealers.
The 6 speed gearboxes are considerably more reliable than the old 5 speed boxes. I had the oil changed (as well as some other bits whilst it was "open") in my old E65, and the guy at the gearbox place said that failures on the 6 speed boxes were considerably less common than the 5 speed ones, even at high mileages.

Yes, they still have the "sealed for life" tag, but generally, if they shift OK when you're purchasing the car, and you're looking at getting the oil done etc, then the gearbox wouldn't really be a concern of mine to be honest.

I've had both; two A4 TDIs and my current A8. Guess which has been more problematic... yup, the A8 which is on the verge of being written off due to electrical gremlins. I'd have another in a heartbeat though - or an A6 V8 but there's a D2 S8 I have my eye on at the moment.
I had an early D2 A8 Quattro Sport (4 speed) which I bought with 100k miles and sold with 212k miles. Rock solid reliable aside from front suspension arms. The 5 speeds do seem a lot more temperamental.

Not sure how many bargists used to use 'ukvehicle.com' but it's now re-branded itself as https://cazana.com/uk/. I've found it to be a useful tool when looking at potential purchases as it has MOT history and previous adverts, reg numbers etc all in one place.
Possibly worth a look to find out how much mark up on it or depreciation a particular vehicle has since it was last sold.

Thanks for that, this is a new one to me. Just spent the last 15mins looking up my old cars.

Here's a question for something that may be impossible - I've just realised that if it's possible, someone here will know!

I know the plate of a car my dad had years ago and I also know that the next owners changed it to their own plate (the car was S-reg and their plate was I think a D-reg but I can't remember it)

Is there any way to look up the car using the original S-reg number? I've got no idea how to contact them - I only know they swapped the plate because I bumped into them soon after my dad sold it

The original I can tolerate, being in Street Fighter II gives it enough cred to ignore the slightly boring styling, but the 430 is just wilfully gopping to my eye.

No denying the step-change in engineering that went into the original though, I imagine there were many furiously furrowed brows in Coventry, Munich and Stuttgart when they got one in to rip apart...

All this LS400 talk has made me want one but there seems to be a lack of decent ones for sale at the moment.

After my failed attempt at a SOTW like E46 330Ci, I fancy a CL500 or something equally large and barge like.

Not sure if to try the budget end out in the bargain basement or look for something a bit better / pricier?

Fellow bargists,

Would i become a barge owner at heart after purchasing one of these in the future?

The spec list does seem wonderful enough..

lick
Just oozing with opulence while retaining that BMW ethos.. 2009 with 38,000 miles, one owner, BMW history and most importantly, the rare LCI 4.4 V8 on top of the evn more rare long wheelbase at a reputable dealership does seem particularly tasty too.

Opinions?

Well I for one think you are to be applauded for a left field choice...though I suspect you may die of boredom before it dies.
