The numbers who would volunteer for a 1980's car at 2016 prices would be very low, and the way the cars were put together would require some real manufacturing hurdles to be crossed.
It's worse than that. In today's money, car's like the 124, 126, 129 and the Porsche 993 cost twice as much to build as today's equivalents. And that was when they were in full scale production. The change from 993 to 996 was necessary for Porsche because they desperately needed to take manufacturing cost out of the car, as well as to create a platform which was more crashworthy.Even if you had the complete production line and supply chain transported through time for these cars I think they could probably cost 2x what today's equivalents cost, and if you had to make them in very low volume they would probably be 4x the price of a new equivalent. Gavin Green's long-term 300E-24 W124 saloon in about 1992 had a sticker price of well north of £40K, and it didn't even have air conditioning.
These E55s have both now been reduced to thread-budget haggle-range. Bluey-purple one is a facelift and a much more interesting colour, but it has more miles, Ditchfinders, missing pixels and a slightly more dubious MOT history. Silver one has at least one bubbling arch and at least one Pilot Sport. I think I prefer the look of the earlier cars.
Last year you could get an OK one of these for under £4K!

I think I know what you mean. Urban and self-confident. Refined and elegant. The epitome of savoir-vivre. He knows what he owes the past and accepts his place in tradition. Man at his best. The masculine spirit in all its timelessness and fundamental ideals: strong, yet sensitivel charismatic, yet approachable. A gentlemen. Courteous. Ambitious. His eternal sophistication that charms and fascinates. Man, as we imagine him to be, and as a woman secretly hopes for. JF87 said:

There is something weird about this one. Where is the boot star? But more to the point, where are the holes by which the boot star is attached?Last year you could get an OK one of these for under £4K!

There's probably about 6 of us. And I'm not buying at the moment.
But I like the 4 wheel drive, it seems to steer well, it should be reliable, it's full of toys and it's not vulgar.
What else can you get that delivers the above and is undsr 5k?

Ssshh about the Legend, I'm possibly in the market in the New Year, and after a drive in a leggy one, its that or a Lexus.
As I read the first bit, I was thinking the second. I suspect that, if the Lexus is regarded as anonymous, brilliant but dull, then the Legend is probably slightly more characterful but even duller. The market for them, especially as they get older, is probably almost entirely logged-in to this thread.

The silver one has only been listed in the last 24 hours or so, and is at a dealer. By implication they paid well below £5.5k.The blue one has been for sale for ever.
I think the clearing price is about £4k - there was a clean-looking and well-described example which came up last month at £4.5k and sold after a week or so and probably for £4k.

Well, I have to take a break from barging; I've just put my DHP VVTi LS400 in the classifieds. I've loved owning it and I'm sure I'll end up back in an LS at some point (this one is my third!) but I'm going from 3k miles per year to 25k so it's time for a change. It would be great to see it go a threadist (I'm not the most active on here but this is one of my favourite threads to read!) so if anyone wants more info please let me know. There is quite a lot of info in the advert, mind you . . .

Why are all these lovely saloons getting offloaded when I'm only allowed an estate? Is there any chance you could weld an avensis on to the boot? I'd give you the asking price. Unless you really NEED to carry around wardrobes on a regular basis, there is just so much room in an LS that you can probably manage. I've done a couple of airport collections for family, and you can get four adults, plus driver in the car, then all of their suitcases and hand luggage in the boot. It swallows all of the crap that my two small kids require (pushchairs, toys, endless bags, coats etc) and it all just looks lost in the boot.
