I'd be surprised if these didn't have some form of protection. I'm not sure about other areas but E65s are not models to generally suffer from rust issues. In fact, from E65/E60/E90 onwards, their rust protection seems much better.

When you've had your plate used and abused by criminals, it suddenly makes a lot more sense.

If someone is genuinely, GENUINELY interested - they'll phone up with more questions than just "REG NUMBER PLS LOL?". Then you know you're talking to someone serious, rather than a serial time waster and picture collector.

This car is far, far too grey for me - but now I'm doing 40k a year I ought to be driving something like it. A friend of mine reckons it's the last really decent E Class - but then I reckon men have been saying that for the last 20 years.
I understand the points about criminals but for a common car like this unless you cover it up or remove the plates in public they are available for everyone to see anyway. I guess it makes it more difficult but it also reduces your audience when you're trying to sell.
Edit to add: re that 760 the vendor says under sealing it is part of the deal.

I agree with the comment on the c140. I wouldn't mind a 600SEL like the one Clarkson tested back in the day though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuEmA-Hdur0&ap...
They must be pretty rare with suffix rather than prefix badging. We had a green 600SEC here's a while ago that I liked, but it was rusty
Especailly as the suffix badges were usually changed by MB at service time so many that were originally suffix became prefix

If you're a wrongun with an iffy blue 540, for example, it's far easier to hop on AT and look for a blue 540 and pinch its reg than hope you see one whilst out and about.

Or do a Google search for a particular model in a particular colour and year and you'll find hundreds.

More and more I'm thinking that what I'd really like is a W220 S-Class. I don't know why - I was pretty indifferent but they're just growing rapidly in their appeal to me

I think they have to be kept immaculate, otherwise they look a little private hire or cheap try hard. Kept well, however, they are very fine indeed and really are stonking value. This one always impressed me:

That's the problem - there's almost nothing I'd like less than a clapped out, rusty W220, but almost nothing I'd like more than a well-kept V8 or V12 W220 in a rare but suitable colour (inside and out)

I know... I keep going back to this one 600. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/272544661983?dest=h...

£7,295 - has it come down at all?

While I'm musing about it, with a W220 would we say the thing to do is get the best condition, latest model you can find?

2004 and up are supposedly better built: no disc slot in the sat nav is the give away. But condition is always going to be the clincher.

W140 S600 in budget at the moment on ebay. The ad and photos are not exactly fantastic... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252772508306?ul_noapp=tr...

Yes, I have been watching for a couple of months. I believe it started at £7995, then £7495, then £8995 at which point I emailed to ask what was going on - they said they needed it gone, now they didn't but I could have it for £7495. More recently it had gone back down to £7495 and now reduced to its all time low of £7295.

By the time I have money passing through my account in a month or so time it will hopefully still be around and priced at mid thread budget smile

That looks like a lot of car for the money assuming the miles check out

The miles check out and the MOT history is very good considering.

I think a manky one can have charm, but only in 500 or 600 guise and having owned since minty - that slightly gauche attitude of running something nice until it dies.

I was thinking along the lines of buying one now - buying a rusty and clapped out one would seem a bit Phil Mitchell to me

Have we had this one yet? "No warning lights....ABC suspension working perfect...runs great.". A bit leggy so perhaps over priced at slightly over budget? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-S600-BITURBO-50...
