All very well and good pal, but have you ever tried to drive from North Dorset to Orlando FL?
In all seriousness I'm with you. We are planning a little break up in the Highlands in the summer. O/H wants to plane it and rent a car, I'm all for driving.. hopefully in a 190!!
Drive. Even if you're coming from Land's End it's probably quicker than flying and a heck of a lot more agreeable. Plus you have your own car while you're there, with all that that means. And you can take what you want and buy what you want. From Manchester upwards the journey will be a pleasure. In all seriousness I'm with you. My fear of flying protects me from having to go to Orlando. I have in mind a sabbatical tour of the United States of America. You know, if the numbers come up. I would want to take my own car. And I think we too would cross the Atlantic by ship. In summer 2003 I did borrow a small fortune in order to fly in style, setting my personal best (and unlikely to be bettered) of 1,340mph.
Finally, the best numberplate I ever saw was MA02 FLY spaced MAD 2 FLY. It was on a Mondeo, slightly incongruously.

Could you get that BMW on a classic car insurance policy ?
Nope. Not easily. You MIGHT find that there's somebody somewhere that will do it (in the same way that Peter Best insure a Rover 75 as a classic as they have a long relationship with the MG owners club) - but you'll likely find it not a lot cheaper than a low miles standard policy.
Good luck trying to get the vendor of that BMW to answer the phone too...

If looking around a plane and having flying explained to you would help at all, I'd gladly show you round some aircraft at Farnborough. My fear of flying protects me from having to go to Orlando. They really are much safer than driving. If you could understand the inherent redundancy that goes into the design it would probably put your mind at rest (3 completely independant hydraulic systems for instance). Most accidents are human error and most are light aircraft.
That said, Id rather drive to Europe and make the journey part of the adventure.

I remember the pics of yours, lovely colour. Wasn't it, for want of a better term, 'one coat' paint too? i.e. not clearcoat over base? I would have loved to have a go at that with a machine polisher & some top quality polishes & waxes.
It was indeed. I'm yet to own a proper machine polisher, but even doing it by hand was immensely satisfying.BorniteIdentity said:

If the cost wasn't so prohibitive I'd always choose to drive rather than fly, but when you can get to various European capitals for <£100 (even including parking at the airport etc) it's a no-brainer for me, especially when time is short.
That said r129, I totally agree about how dreadful airports are.
Seems genuine enough -

Advice please bargistas:
I'm sitting outside MB Belfast having gone to buy a new lock barrel and key for the s124, and a slam panel plate for the r129. Armed with id and the log books, I was then informed that they have to physically see the car and photos the bin plate themselves! So he's expecting me to do a 150 mile round trip, twice!
Is this BS, it's the first I've heard of it.

They're usually happy for me to email them pics of the car and scans of the docs. I assume you're known to them so they may be equally happy for you to do the same.I'm sitting outside MB Belfast having gone to buy a new lock barrel and key for the s124, and a slam panel plate for the r129. As other have now mentioned you won't get an anywhere decent 129 for mod thread budget, even if you could its only lap belts in the rear.
Couple of CL's were mentioned a few pages back, big cars though.
A nice Volvo C70 t5 convertible might be worth a look.

C70s are very cheap, and the 2.4GTs much more plentiful than the T5s.
The 2.4 GT is indeed more common that's why id go for a t5.
Agree a T5's nice, assuming good one can be found, but the 2.4 can be taken to a similar output without modification, hence the thought of fishing in the bigger pool.
My insular life and simpleton outlook, plus the fact I don't do any of it too often, finds wonderment in all form of transport (I'm the one gazing at Burmantofts and grout gaps at London Underground stations, soaking up the engineering marvellousness whilst everyone around me tuts and blows for getting in the bloody way). But I still see flying as having the most romance. Airports are (only just) more tolerable than traffic congestion and eyes-down lunatics coming at you on the wrong side of the road whilst checking their Facebook status. Plus you can have as many Bloody Mary's as you like on a plane, and I do enjoy a risk and a big wodge of turbulence, so being reputedly more likely to kill you only adds to the appeal.

I love that. Utilitarian, yet as classy as it comes: all the better for a few battle scars and patina. And so cheap for one so advisory free. How do cars like this last for more than an hour in the classifieds?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
