I know it's over thread budget, but this looks absolutely wonderful. Seller sounds like the perfect owner too.

Wow, very special indeed. Though I'm not sure I believe the story about the 20 lucky owners. More likely these were dealer launch roadshow cars that saw a lot of arse in the first few months of their lives. Not that they'll have been abused. Probably quite the opposite.

That steering wheel though, good grief.
That looks really nice and well priced for a 500. There are a few 320 diesels within thread budget but have not yet seen a 500 at thread level and perhaps because of their relative scarcity there never will be.

Actually an interesting question, what will be the first big car not to be available for sub £5k. Inflation will surely mean some newer barges will remain forever out of thread budget......

I find the clock incongruous.

The tanks go in three main places (although the design makes widespread rot an option as well).

From the filler neck a two inch bore rubber pipe is jubilee clipped onto a neck at the lower offside rear of the tank - this can be seen just behind the offside rear wheel and the neck of the stub into the tank is rot spot number 1. The tank is a saddle-bag tank over the prop-shaft and is constructed with and upper and lower half so the lengthy seam is about two-thirds up - rot spot number two. There are some small-bore breather and balance lines attached to the tank - rot spot three.

From new the tanks had a plasti-cote style coating to protect them - all well and good when new but a slight stone chip breaks that coating only slightly then water tracks in underneath the coating causing widespread creeping rot; the solution at this age is to seek out every chip and spot of corrosion and chase it out until you get to good metal then treat, paint, seal and coat again with something durable.

A new BMW tank will cost into 4 figures and could well be worth doing for an otherwise immaculate car; after-market 85 litre tanks are available for a fraction of the BMW cost but the V12's and the 740iL were fitted with 95 litre tanks.

This isn't cut and pasted - I have BTDT with this (gratuitous picture time)....

Hmmm.

Cubanite is a great colour in the metal, the photos in that ad don't do it justice.

A small update on the 190E, but finally..

THE spoiler has gone, I got another boot lid and a painter friend did the painting for me. I got itchy fingers and bought this though (sorry, not very barge)

I don't think the 190E is worth selling at the moment (possibly in the summer) but I plan to store it over the winter and see what happens next year.

Fully on board with what you are saying. I'm currently in a new BMW with LED lights, they are very very good and *should* never need replacing...... right.........right?

Think they have an 11,000hr life.
you'll be fine, they last forever, just look at my 7 year old S4....

Oh on second thoughts don't laugh

Top work on both parts! The 190E looks a million times better now.

Although I have ended up warming to the spoiler on my E39.

That said the electric seat buttons feel very cheap compared to those in the W220 which in turn feel like they are made of cheese compared to those on the W140 which I believe was Mercedes peak electric seat switch!

Oh I love the M3. Manual or SMG?

Perhaps get around to putting an Ad on car and classic and here for the 190 with good photos and a strong price. They sell reasonably slowly but someone might come along.

Have you decided on a replacement?

The ad could use a soupçon more detail but it looks like a lot of car for the money....currently sitting at mid thread budget with 22 bids.
I love the colour but my kids would destroy that interior!
Ad says it's got a fresh MOT but a check says it runs out this week.
We need more opportunity to use 'soupçon' on a regular basis!

As we have indeed had a few apparent gems offered for sale at la maison de palm previously there's some precedent that will be a lovely car. I generally can't love the 211 but that's one of the few that I'd be happy to own based on appearance alone.

And a bargists thesaurus?

A classy looking motor too.

With a private plate you'd be pushed to guess the year, but it's probably best to leave stock as it's stunning for a 10 year old car.

I suspect general Melchett would be a regular on this thread, a definite bargista, but none of that "Boche stuff", would be his guiding principle biggrin

An eBay serving suggestion from the S500 above:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-BENZ-E500-ONE-F...

Nice photos, light and airy interior. It's a metallic cherry red, sort of sparkly almandine with white leather estate W211.

That E500 doesn't get any less scrummy. Will it hit upper thread budget? This £1,750 540 looks like a nice colour-matched bargain alternative.

The guy selling it also posts on the Gwagon owners forum so its enthusiast owned. Looks like its been clocked though going by the mots.
