Best smoker barges 1-5 large [vol11]
Discussion
I'm not a fan of the carbon fibre, but 400 horses is a good stable... Under £4k.

Inconsistent and poor ad, but nice-looking car.

Yes, I would quite happily smoke around that (after checking the engine number to see if it's liable for the cam sprocket job, or if it's been done). I like the colourhttp://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

I do like BMW's, and they're very capable, but i'd struggle to look past a well-maintained, well-bought XJ for that job.
I'm with the ennobled one on this 0a. For motorway waft and fast road fun, XJ all the way. And, more pertinently, I don't think you've ever yet owned a Jag have you?
I had been considering an e55, but on reflection I have work that I need to do to all my cars that I am about to kick off. The w124 is now booked in for a complete respray, the SL will head for a new roof and exhaust shortly after, and the 190 has a couple of bits to complete (I'll probably sell it after that). This will be a significant drain on resources.
Therefore there's a need for another car, and a long distance mile muncher seems like a good addition. I don't want it to be dead to a good road though.

On a more serious note, this XJR looks decent and means you get the comfort you're looking for, plus sort of scratching the E55 itch

What's the most comfortable way to travel 300 miles from edinburgh to the midlands for say £2k. Mostly motorway(. It with the odd bit of pleasing A-road where a good handling car would be appreciated?
LS400 (fails the A road amusement)
Jag XJ perhaps
I wouldn't say the LS fails the A or B road test, in fact I preferred it over my X300 on the open, winding B roads that I generally only ever drive on. Steering feel in particular was superior to the Jag, which suffered that usual XJ dead feel around the straight ahead. Neither are 205gti's of course. I've said it before but they do feel like a V8 E39 from behind the wheel. If you want total numb isolation, both in NVH and driver involvement, the '430 is the car.LS400 (fails the A road amusement)
Jag XJ perhaps
When is the barge meet? Happy to toss you the keys to mine for evaluation if I can make it (currently on probation with the bread knife following a chap's abroad jolly last weekend).

That looks smashing, although looking at the MOT for last year it might need some springs and a touch of welding underneath soon.http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-JAGUAR-XJR-V8-AUTO-RE...

I'd be looking at an X300, ideally a 4.0, but wouldn't discount a 3.2 if it was the right car (history and condition wise).
I'd only look to spend money on any X308 if it had proof of timing chain tensioner work carried out.
Well, anything more than throw away (£1k) money, anyway...
For a 4h job (if it even needs doing, lots of them have already been done) I wouldn't turn down a 308.I'd only look to spend money on any X308 if it had proof of timing chain tensioner work carried out.

Get this bad boy bought quickly, or I think CDG will be pulling the trigger, as I think it ticks lots of boxes for him.....

It's for just this sort of car that the following phrases were coined:http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-xj6-sport-slammed-w...
'it's a weapon'
'pull the trigger'
'pulls like a train'
'a something-else on the log book'
'innit' etc, etc
and, most pertinently here:
'not with yours ...'
I really like the look of this, I even really like the smoked chrome wheels.
Service history and ad both read well, but I'd have to throw a few hundred in and have the little bit of rust on the rear section repaired properly.
Wings done, but no mention of NIKASIL or tensioners... I may go and have a look at this one.

£4295 on eBay...

I'm not sure I agree that the ad reads well. It seems slightly bullstty to me and he's selling after a recent buy, seemingly having done nothing to it. Item number 272590232547
I'm also pretty sure that we've seen similar models at less money, although I do get confused with which XJ model is which. 4 grand for a fairly common 16 year old big-engined Jag with rust and a collapsing headlining. Really?
I know you like the wheels but I'd prefer to see a more original (and, frankly, more-loved) car before parting with my own readies.
Sorry to piss on your chips.
