As a 210 owner I concur. Very capable cars let down by cost-cutting in the 00s. I paid a lot of money for mine to be rid of rust, but it's coming back again, three years after. In true thread fashion I will not recoup my outlay. Mechanically it feels it will last forever and drives very well

This is what did for my slk 32. You never really get rid of the rust, merely keep it at bay.

The first time I had it done under warranty in 2008..the man at the bodyshop told me to sell it straight away but i was in love..since then it's been done another 2 times before I sold it in December

Ultimately its down to the cost v depreciation ( or lack of!). Given the car was at the bottom of the depreciation curve it was cheaper to factor in the repairs every couple of years

If only they hadn't cheap-skated on the steel or the paint or whatever it was they cheap-skated on, we'd all be driving 210s and singing their praises as the ultimate barge. It's such a shame, because in all other respects they're really rather brilliant.

Seems to be some are really badly effected and others less so. A period of time where Mercedes really did lose their way, I passed a w220 s500 on the motorway on Friday and it was riddled with rust.

Saw this article in yesterday's super soaraway Sun and thought of this thread (because of the Jag, not the paper). Is the secret out?

Someone who worked on the cars must have discussed this by now - some cars affected some cars not is no coincidence. Perhaps scouring Germany forums would reveal the answer. I would love an e55 estate but a little out of my budget really.

It's probably a multitude of things - they changed a few things later on in production, maybe the conditions they're used in has an effect on them as well?

If it was a straight-forward cause someone would've identified it by now.

No, especially when there was a verbal five year guarantee and supposed use of Bilt Hamber stuff. Nevermind, move on. Not worth digging up the past for a car worth under thread minimum. Fortunately it's just the rear arches starting to blister.

The estates and non-silver cars seem less affected.

My C140 will need attention soon too but then that's 19 years old

Time to post some first impressions of the newly acquired s211 E500.

Up on the train to the big smoke and met at the station by the vendor Angus. What a gent. Took me back to his house made me a cuppa and then spent quite some time showing me the myriad of features on the car. It is really packed with tech. A better seller you would be hard pressed to find. Many thanks Angus if you are reading.

Engine

Truly impressive piece of engineering. Smooth and has masses of power in reserve at any speed. The acceleration on the motorway was such that I put the cruise on to preserve my license. What must the 55/63 be like? No one requires more power than this has.

Suspension

This was the biggest revalation for me. Did not feel like any e class I have previously driven. Probably exaggerated by the fact that I have been driving my mx5 for the last month, but waft is the order of. He day. I have decided that sport 1 is my favourite setting. I wasn't sure I liked ithe air suspension to start with as I felt it was less sporty than I was expecting but the more you drive it the more capable You realise it is.

Interior

Stereo amazing. COMAND dated but quite clever. Seats extremely comfortable but jury is out whether the dynamic seats are for me. Gripes? Poor cubby hole provision as every nook or cranny is filled with some piece of tech! I sit a little high in it and would prefer to be lower. Generally could not be happier, what a lot of car for the money.

Right more updates later but off to work out how to change the clock!

Hadn't realised that E220 Cabriolets could still be bought for such reasonable money. Every home should have one.

They seem to take a long time to sell. £4k for a 220 and £8k for a 320 seems to be the starting point. Low milers are hawked at £25k and more but no one buys them.
...I think you'd get something decent still in single figures.
I've just had my morning coffee in the sun with the Mercedes Club gazette. Auction news reveals that ACA Auctions sold a 93 E320 cabrio with 166k miles for £6,300. I suspect the miles hit the value because that seems pretty cheap, but shows that it's still do-able.

The only similar car advertised in the mag with a dealer is on at £18,950, a Sportline with 70k.

Hopefully my w124 won't need doing so often once done. I just need to collect the panels from the midlands and it will go in. Very exciting.

The 500 sounds like a great car!

I've been looking for a 190E, not to buy yet but to get an idea of the market. I came across this car in error.

http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/mercedes-benz/...

It's a 202 of course. If it was a 190E in this condition (always assuming the write up is spot on - a leap of faith I know) it would be offer for twice that or more.

It's either an indictment of the 202 or of those going for the 190.

I understand that if it looks too good to be true . . . and all that. But even so it seems remarkable value.

That's expensive. You'd get a nice 190 for a lot less than that.

ETA - Just to hammer home the point, for an old C class it's crack-pipe pricing.

Seriously? That's 3k for a W202 that's done less than 40K. I'm not sure I've seen any halfway decent 190E for less than £4k, let alone one with just that mileage.
