Mini-update to the missus' E-Class CDi running problem. (I'm calling it Wastegategate)
Swapping on a known-to-be-good actuator has made the problem almost go away. Almost. But fault code 2616 (exhaust back pressure) is still occurring. But, whilst the car has almost completely stopped bucking, and feels a bit down on power, it's not the flinching cripple it was this morning.
I'm going to experiment with a few things more, and I'll report back.
Cheers, SJ. Interresting updatre. Do please keep us informed!Swapping on a known-to-be-good actuator has made the problem almost go away. Almost. It crossed my mind the other day that I hadn't done my air filter for ages ( ) so I got a new one and stuck it in. Maybe placebo efect but it feels a tad smoother at speed and under load now. Still got some cold jerkyness though, so maybe that's the TC. I expect a long hot run will give me the limp mode though still. Might just buy an actuator now. When you replaced your wife's, did it need "marrying" to the turbo or the car in general, or is it just a clip off/clip on job?

Doesn't sound poorly specced but there's plenty as standard that actually matters anyway.
I have no experience of the B14's but a standard e39 M5 has the best damping for road use in any car I've encountered by far, not sure how they'll compare.
I'll save the stock components just in case.I have no experience of the B14's but a standard e39 M5 has the best damping for road use in any car I've encountered by far, not sure how they'll compare.

Apropos the XJ40 I'd agree - magnificent machines with truly magnificent ride. I can't profess to have sampled the barge spectra like r129 and SJ etc, but I remember it was being particularly spectacular on that front.

I was waiting for the "But".
But it never came. Sounds like the perfect M5. Who cares if it hasn't got a heated, vibrating fridge trimmed in dinosaur hide in the offside rear passenger door?
Hahahaaa, that cracked me up. I'm under the impression that less (mostly useless anyway) stuff a car has the better it is, less bork potential. But it never came. Sounds like the perfect M5. Hopefully there is no buts in the equation further up the road. I'm stoked, never has a properly fast car. Sure it's not 2017 fast, but an almost 2 ton saloon car that does 62-125 in just over 11 seconds is as fast a car as I'll ever need.

Off the road since August - looks good, but a bit worrying what you might find once you start using it again.
Well, this post has turned out to be correct - but it wasn't me, it was the MOT tester. Just had a call from an apologetic seller to say it failed on something ABS related. Annoying as I am already on my way so can't drive it back. Never mind, I will go and take a look at it anyway as I need to get down south... the MOT was a bit of gamble but the seller was very sure it would pass and the timings worked for me! 0a said:

Could you not book a MOT back in Edinburgh and drive it back?!r129sl said:

Pity about the car 0a. Never mind, onwards and upwards...
As there are a few of us that possibly appear somewhere on a spectrum, there might be some appreciation for this thread:

Good man 0a. If it were me, I confess that I'd drive it - live dangerously.
My first ever barge was an auction purchase. No tax, no ticket. It was a 320 TE. Ever so law abiding, I went to a trader chum and borrowed his trade plates. But I was so excited I left them at my office. I just drove it back well within the speed limit.Anyway, which of us at some time hasn't driven around for weeks blissfully unaware that the MOT has expired?
Just drive it!
Yes I was tempted, but in the end decided against it. I need to head south to visit family tonight, and I think 2 long journeys is pushing it a bit. I have plenty of time tonight and am able to enjoy a beer or two on the way now! If it was recently out of MOT it would be a different matter.
The car itself looks lovely. A small bleb of surface rust on the boot which should be easy to fix with my paint guys being the only negative (as described). Paint otherwise good with new front wings that match perfectly. The interior is in excellent condition, engine bay clean, and the seller a really nice chap (it was his wife's car, she was sad to be selling and I have promised to send photos!). Loads of history, including a copy of the ad from when they purchased it for £25k. Fingers crossed that it's easy enough to fix - my mechanic seems to think it will be fine (he is a big jag enthusiast!).
The car was as good / better than the pictures in the metal and has been garaged and waxoiled.
