The car itself looks lovely. A small bleb of surface rust on the boot which should be easy to fix with my paint guys being the only negative (as described). Paint otherwise good with new front wings that match perfectly. The interior is in excellent condition, engine bay clean, and the seller a really nice chap (it was his wife's car, she was sad to be selling and I have promised to send photos!). Loads of history, including a copy of the ad from when they purchased it for £25k. Fingers crossed that it's easy enough to fix - my mechanic seems to think it will be fine (he is a big jag enthusiast!).

That was the Ulverston car? I was half tempted myself (family live there) and thought about sending them over to take a look. Given breakdown insurance I'd be tempted to drive it back to my mechanic at home for a pre-arranged MOT.

It was indeed the Ulverston car.
An X308 XJ8? It'll be a 5 speed ZF gearbox I think. The XJR was the 5 speed Mercedes gearbox.
I was going to write 'Daimler' in place of 'Mercedes' but in a Jaguar and Mercedes context that would be a little ambiguous

The car has a lovely feel to it and has clearly been loved. The seller insisted on showing me the garage it has lived in and was a really nice chap. In fact I had a pint of real ale with him in the pub near the station on the way back.
For the amount I ended up paying I will be able to ship it and fix it for a low total expenditure, hopefully. I put all my cars into my mechanic for a check up in any case so it's just a more direct way of achieving this!

That ZF 5 speed box has a couple of known weaknesses and has the usual "sealed for life" thing as every other "modern" box, so a fluid change with the right Esso LT71141 fluid would be a good idea if it hasn't already been done.
I personally prefer the old school charm of the X300 vs the slightly Toby Carvery interior of the X308 but there is no denying that the V8 gave the X308 some much needed punch.

I've grown to like the unusual 3 gear box, but yes you need to be firm with it.
