Best smoker barges 1-5 large [vol11]
Discussion
looks like some great recent purchases!
I've come back from Bulgaria where there were plenty of old W124s and similar as well as a surprising number of Phaetons which was nice to see. It often seems like my E39 is one of the older cars that I see around these days even though it still feels new to me, but it wouldn't come close in Sofia.
In slightly embarrassing news, I have only worked out that I have folding mirrors after accidentally pressing the button at the airport parking. Still i'll get plenty of use out of it now.

I'm actually cross with myself that I am not in a position to snap this up.

Well, in general news, my E39 530i Touring continues to looks dead smart under its shiny new paint. I might buy it a new set of CrossClimates shortly. I've had 27,000 miles out of the PremiumContacts it's on, and they have enough tread left for the summer but I think by September I shall have some new ones and by all reports the CrossClimates seem very good for an all-purpose barge.
Did a 350 mile A1 / M62 / M6 day across the Pennines and back to Cosford last Sunday and it did 35 mpg, undoubtedly aided by all the 50 mph averaging-camera sections. Mileage is about 162,000 now. The engine is super-sweet, pulls well and seems in basicaly good health but does use a fair amount of oil, like a lot of M54 engines. I suspect by 200,000 miles I will have had a rebuild or an exchange engine. It's really the only remaining part of the car (apart from the tatty driver's seat) that's likely to need significant refurb now for the next few years.
Come the weekend I'll exercise the Porsche and then swap it over for the Mercedes, I haven't had that out for a while and it's probably the wekend to take off the hardtop.

Thanks for all the best wishes - I agree it is worth spending some money on the SEC. I will run it for the 6 months tax I have put on it then over the winter will change the timing chain, injectors and whatever else needs doing to the top end - camshaft oil pipes I think is another item on these engines. I will "manage" the body for a while, but it will need wings and paint in the medium term.
No grainy refuelling shot (I will fuel it later as I never trust a "new" car's fuel gauge from the start) but suitably grainy shot of SEC meeting CLS in the car park - the CLS will stay here for a few days to take pressure off the drive while we have visitors staying and I clear the garage sufficiently to get the SEC in - it's roughly the same size as the CLS but that lives outside.
0a - congrats on the Jaguar purchase. Did you get anywhere with the gold'n'brown 124?

Apparently the XJ8 has arrived in Edinburgh. This acquisition also means i have an excuse to expand the airport magazine purchase range.
I never see any good magazines to buy. Was the XJS 6.0 and XK8 comparison interesting? I often find these things very much lacking in depth and they always say "they are both winners, hurrah" with no meaningful comparisons carried out.0a said:

Will the new motor be making an appearance at York for the barge meet?I will apologise ahead of the event - I will be lowering the tone (again!) by turning up in the V8 Disco.
My search for a suitable barge is being hindered by my inner 6-year-old demanding I buy a Burt Reynolds style Pontiac Trans Am (LHD impracticalities, "screaming chicken" sticker on the bonnet and 11mpg aside...) and I keep seeing very tidy Porsche 996's available for pennies (probably with good reason) so until I resolve these mental conflicts, I will be sticking with the old bus.
Seeing as it's a barge, it's somewhat unusual and many of you threadfolk are quite knowledgeable, this seems as good a place to ask as any; anyone know the origins of this registration I saw on this quite tidy Audi 100 Avant the other day? Can't recall seeing one like it before, but then I'm not particularly well travelled...
Definitely looks like a foreign plate, I'd be highly distracted if I was stuck behind that in a queue!
Was behind a similar car to this in traffic, reminded how nice a piece of a design it was for post-millennia. With diesel being so out of fashion I think petrol is the way to go:
