Has my car really lost £850 in value since 18 months ago.
I'm still wondering what it would be like to lose only £850 in depreciation in 18 months. And this is the OPs worst scenario !

I must be doing something wrong.....

UPDATE:

I put it on eBay with a starting auction price of £0.99 and no reserve.

It's been on for about 12 hours and had had about 7 bids worth double what the guy who came to see it offered me.

I mentioned that the car has wear and tear and that the buyer should expect it to be in the condition of a 16 year old car.

I've had somebody ask to come view it. I've already had somebody offer me instant cash for £400 (Although I have no idea how I can do this because if I end the auction doesn't it go to the current highest bidder?)

Thanks for your suggestions everyone!
Told you.

As for the cash offer, let them know you'll take £400 but won't end the auction until cash is in hand. You can end the auction of the item is no longer available.

This thread is amazing - not just the OP but all of the people that have suggested an old Focus with a knackered clutch, bald tyres and rust issues is worth anything over scrap value when there are thousands of better ones available

My best guess is that some parts of the country really have slim pickings for bangers which skews perceptions
or you limited viewpoint is wrong. clearly it is worth than scrap, it moves and has a mot. it is not kaput yet.

eBay still charges fees if I pull the car from auction now because it's had bidders.

I have investigated the current winner and he has multiple reviews of winning bids and simply never showing up or paying. I'm planning on removing his bids and blocking him at the very least.

They won't charge fees. Search on google "delete my eBay ad" follow the link and claim that the item is no longer available. Pull the listing and you won't be charged. failing that make a fake eBay account and outbid the bidders and then claim that the buyer backed out.

Please see this eBay link: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/end_early.html

It says that as I have 1 or more buyers and wish to cancel rather than selling to the current highest bidder, I am liable for eBay fees.

Take it down the scrap yard and argue with them. The alloys are worth £20 each, the battery if its any good is worth a tenner, fill the fuel tank with water so it weights a bit more and you'll probably be looking at nearly £100 all in, money in the bank and no hassle.

At the moment all you have is a barely legal/illegal poverty spec 15 year old Focus which will need money spending on it to keep it on the road for another 12 months. Sorry to say its not worth a lot, but when it was £1k to begin with and you've had 18 months of motoring without spending any money on it, then I think you've done ok!

Why would he do this instead of accepting the £400 cash offer he has?

A message on eBay from some timewaster isn't the same as someone standing on his driveway with cash.

Easy, no comeback, no tyre kickers, no dodgy cash or people wanting to pay with a cheque. Selling a £400 car attracts all kinds of time wasters.

We'll see tomorrow if this is just another one.

Showed the car to somebody else today too who said they were happy with the car and going to up their bid from the current value of £300. So it'll be going to them if I don't get cash tomorrow smile

Or breakers who turn up pay cash and go with no dramas.
