IME, as modern cars have soo much grip, the number of people who can actually drift them, and the number of places that have enough space to safely do that are vanishing-ly small. I mean, who is actually going to take a £60k massive AMG merc on a track day? It'd be hopeless, and the tyres will be wrecked (about £1000 of them!) in 3 laps....

And drifting is generally frowned-upon on track days. Although if I were tracking an AMG Merc I'd own a spare set of track wheels and tyres.

The mode exists because it can, because it sells cars, not because it will really be used.

My issue with drift modes is because it never was around before. It implies that you have no skill and you need to 'turn on' a mode in order for you to achieve it. It's like turning on aim assist in a first-person-shooter video game, before you would simply just turn off all driver aids. It's also trying too hard too, if you have to explain or put a label on something it's not cool. Like wearing a pair of ray-bans that have the logo all over it. Not cool.

I've no issue at all with drifting, but making drifting modes is making it look uncool. It's like acknowledging you're a hipster in a time of peak hipster-ness.
I agree with the labelling point, but drift modes make drifting possible, not easy, don't they? In the AMG you're basically turning off everything and making it RWD, so it's not like "aim assist" - it doesn't help you drift, just allows you to, if you have the skill. Are you saying you'd rather the Merc stayed 4wd and all systems on, or are you just after drift mode being called "Pure Mode" or "Cool Mode" or "Beard Oil Mode"?

I think there is a distinction to be made between drifting and skidding, and, yes, the 'drift mode' should be relabelled as Skid Mode, for that it is what it is.

There is an enormous difference a between getting a modern car with its bells and whistles for driver aids slip a bit ie skid, and the drivers from the 1950/60's (Moss, Clarke etc) controlling a car on its limit of traction.
