What type of cars come across chav like if someone modifies them?

Do you believe it has to at least be a proper hot hatch before exhausts and lowers etc are considered okay, or are warm hatches acceptable? What about the bog standard model?

Is it just a certain type of car that or is it a case of any car aslong as its tasteful, please share your opinions.

Jeez, any car can be modified by it's owner.

There is no rule book, although you will find that around here most of the grumpy old bds will slate nearly every modified car going and tell you not to waste your money modifying your car but to save for the next 10 years an buy a better car;)

Any car can indeed be modified, but you can look like an idiot to the rest of the world when you drive it. HTH

No problem.. your choice.

ETA I should point out that engine mods are different to chav body mods. Hideous style over substance.

I've no problem with subtle, tasteful modifications on any car. Although I prefer standard myself in most instances. Particularly the more expensive/rarer/classic variety.

I think if the modifications are performance orientated and actually make the car better they're fine, while arriving in something that looks like it's got half of Halfords stuck to it isnt.

Big spoilers on 1000bhp monster are good.
Big spoiler on a low powered FWD hatch that will actually make it slower and handle worse are bad.

Probably not a great idea on rentals either

This is, and will be, the only correct answer on this thread. Everything else is down to taste. For instance, personally, I think a modified Punto is a bit naff, but if I modified my lotus with some choice functional pieces I'd consider that good. But of course thats IMHO

You can mod any car. And arguably to hell with what others think.

That said, I don't understand or comprehend mods that make cars look gash, trash or just plain stupid. You really have to be very very shallow to mod a car for others benefit, on the sole premise that peer pressure will claim it looks cool. When frankly it just makes you look like a bit of a knob.

On this note, I fully do NOT understand why people take the most common of common cars, and then want to mod them under the premise of wanting 'something different to everyone else' or 'wanting to stand out'. If that was true you wouldn't start with a common car like a Corsa/Focus/whatever..

Nearly all of my cars are modded in one way or another. But probably not in ways many on here would always deem as modifications.

What about louder exhausts on warm/hot hatches

If you're worried about what people think of you then it's probably not worth modifying your car. Most people will look down on/laugh at a 1.0 Corsa with a fart cannon on the back, but likewise plenty of (mainly non-car) people will also not appreciate something like a TVR with aftermarket exhaust, etc.

If you're not bothered then do what you want, you'll always find someone who doesn't like it, no matter what the car...

Usually I would say crack on and modify whatever you want but the other day I saw a Seat Leon FR diesel with a fake dump valve. Dont do that.

Yup, depends entirely on the modification, i'd go as far as saying a set of tasteful wheels and a window tint look nice on some hatches, even a subtle exhaust (no 3" fart cannons). Aforementioned fart cannons and max power bodykits are where I draw the line.

Oh and loopy paintjobs, luminous colours with designs on them almost never look good in my opinion.

But why louder? Why not better sounding? Noise, as in db level never means good, not if it still sounds like st. And frankly almost any 4 pot petrol is always going to sound pretty st.

One of my cars is fairly loud (well ok, several of them are! biggrin ), but I reckon they sound really rather good, but are a long way away from a wheezy 4 pot hatch in terms of soundtrack.

but then again, just like someone modding their non-leased bought fully outright rare classic, i simply couldn't give a rats ass if they do it. it's ``your'' car (even in the case of leasing i know it isnt really), do what you like as long as it doesn't make it dangerous to everyone else on the road. I know not to do it, some people are stupid enough not to know though, so all the "power" to them

I feel rather sorry for anyone who worries about whether other people will think they're "chav". It just seems so sad to worry that much about what strangers will think of you.
