Rover 500 V8 engine for sale - expensive?
Discussion
Spotted this yesterday from TvrGlen....I know their not for sale too often and I'm going on the lack of detail of mileage and history here, as it may be good! But it just strikes me as quite a punt for an engine that may need a new cam etc to get the best out of it. You're already 4.5k down before you start even if it is complete with ancillaries...not without expense in itself granted.
But would it not be better to invest a little more on buying a cheap / or use your own rover 400 engine and part/ex for a V8D special build?
Probably an easier decision if your current engine is knackered ( mines good)
I've considered this exact scenario a few times....Thoughts?

Phil, first question would have to be 'can it be heard running' Personally I think I'd be looking for a good 4.6 to rebuild or the V8D route... their 5.0 performance lump (like me and the plumber have got) is based on the 4.6... IIRC the TVR 5.0 was based on the 3.9...
Just my opinion

To be honest Richard that engine would not be a serious consideration at that price for me. I might be tempted at £2.5k...possibly....depending on history and mileage....I'm not holding my breath though Just my opinion
Which version did you opt for from V8D...did you go the dominator route with some other goodies, what cam? Yep I saw that their 5 is based off the 4.6 block. I'm still going with the turbo but I'm tempted to go for the high end 4.6 at some point, which I think will be a good combo.

'High Performance' 5.0 litre short engine, forged pistons and H-Beam steel connecting rods, 96mm Top hat liner bore with a stroked crankshaft, cross bolted and dynamically balanced (it's actually a tad over 5.0)
My original 500 heads taken to V8D 'stage 4'
Ported & matched inlet manifold
ACT CF plenum with triple TB's
Motorsport grade large bore induction hose (no AFM) and bespoke air box
Ford 'red top' racing injectors
Bespoke cam - was a one off Rob Robertson grind
MS2 fuel & ignition with LR coil packs
pre-cats out
Clive F 'Y'
That's about it... Last RR session it was producing a tad over 360bhp at 6k rpm and 353lb/ft at 4.6k rpm
Bugger, talking about this has made me want to go and fire her up
Here's a piccie...

You've not done it half heartedly hey Richard engine bay looks very nice and impressive figures for a rover NA mate!'High Performance' 5.0 litre short engine, forged pistons and H-Beam steel connecting rods, 96mm Top hat liner bore with a stroked crankshaft, cross bolted and dynamically balanced (it's actually a tad over 5.0)

I'm assuming the MS2 has it running like a different machine though?...did you change the ecu at the same time as the engine work? Would be interesting to know just how different things were before and after on the new engine...if that makes sense....I know what I mean

Phil, I have the same engine as Richard, built by V8D nearly 3 years ago, it has a stealth cam but still running the standard 14CUX, this is my engine while being built
My car gave 325bhp and 370lb/ft, on Jools dyno after a remap, the engine pulls right up to the rev limiter
I think the V8D route is a cracking one to go down Dave.....I'm a regular visitor to their website My car gave 325bhp and 370lb/ft, on Jools dyno after a remap, the engine pulls right up to the rev limiter
I've half got the motor sorted in the wing mirror by the way....the motor housing and wiring is a tad different to the one in there so I've got to get some longer screws and I've been snipping away at the wiring. I ran out of light and then realised when I put her back in the garage like an idiot that I was too close to the wall to carry on. Couldn't be ar**d to take her out again and reposition (it was freezing more to the point) so fingers crossed when I get an hour at some point this week she'll be moving like a goodun
