If you're travelling slower when affected by side wind, you won't go so far off-course as you would if travelling at a higher speed.
The faster you cross the bridge, the lower the chance of encountering a dangerously strong gust. Also, the faster you go, the less time you spend in proximity to other vehicles on the bridge, so the lower the chance of a collision. jamei303 said:

On the west bound carriageway just before the bridge there is a petrol station, the exit slip road from this is quite short and just before the bridge, it's the drivers impatience and their inability to use a slip road correctly that causes the accidents.
nearly right... it' also got the downhill towards the PFS exit, then a sharp uphill afterwards. so its the TRUCKS pulling out can't get up to speed - which causes a slow moving roadblock. people panic brake and travel too close Add in the fact there is no street lighting because the snails in the nearby wildlife area will go blind... plus the oncoming traffic being angled such as to dazzle you... makes for a bit of a boiling pot of conditions. The answer is not to reduce the speed limit, but instead to put a longer exit slip (or close the PFS to trucks), install those anti-dazzle bollards in the central reservation, then install street lighting.
But that COSTS money instead of MAKING money doesnt it.
There are a few stupid little slip roads (< 50 yards in some cases) around the Ipswich area which are accident black spots (East Bergholt & Nayland for example), but rather than extend them, they simply throw up cameras and / or reduce the speed limit and pedal out the same "Speed kills" campaign alongside it.
It's not just the road layouts that are the problem either. The standard of driving around here is abysmal. East Anglia coming almost last in a national intelligence test recently, is clear to see on the roads.
The Orwell bridge is a sore subject for locals. It was closed recently because of wind and all of the shipping traffic to and from Felixstowe port, as well as normal traffic, was diverted through Ipswich. It totally f'cked the whole area for an entire day.
It's hard to believe this is the same country that helped defeat Hitler sometimes.

amusingly, there was a meeting that morning about strategic road infrastructure and none of the delegates could get to it due to the chaos! (did they conclude the northern bypass is needed...?!!)RedAndy said:

The car hating SCC won't be happy until the whole area grinds to a halt. They waited for children to die crossing the A12 before building the underpass at Capel St Mary, which was campaigned for for years.
