So now I know that VW Passat's are vulnerable to blocked pollen drains which can flood the driver side footwell. And I now know that under the floor lies the auto gearbox ECU. Ours is water damaged and needs replacing. The carpets are soaked. The car is early 2005 and not worth buying a new ECU. The second hand ones are £200 and I'm trying to find one from a breaker as the garage doesn't have time to search. Meanwhile, the carpets are damp.

QUESTION: Is it worth replacing the ECU (£600 labour and parts) and living with carpets which may end up smelling?

Any idea what refurbishment and repair will cost? Apparently one of the pins is corroded off. I did suggest a repair to the specialist electrical garage but they said it wouldn't work.

Long time since I used them, it was £100 for an Audi ABS ECU refufb.

So no luck with repair for ECU. I have ordered a second hand part arriving soon. Can I fit it myself? It is from an Audi and my car is a VW. Does that involve it being re-programmed?
