yes
There are a few 400+bhp examples floating around, but they are big money cars - a different car is a cheaper and easier way to do it.

Maybe better off looking for an older rust free S14/s15 - more money for modding

Exactly! It's a beautiful bit of kit but not many will be able to justify spending that on an engine for a £20k car..

A VR6 in a BRZ would work nicely in my opinion!!
Funnily enough that's my plan if my boxer dies in mine.

Already got the adapter plate to mate a 24v VR to a 350z manual box, the VR is shorter than a 2JZ, and likes a little boost.

The engine bay is more than wide enough, just bonnet clearance will be the issue.
