I purchased a 330e in April (Hybrid) and having very poor MPG!

Nearly all of my driving is town driving, and averaging about 20-25MPG. is this correct?
When I do long journeys I can get upto 40MPG, but still this seems quite low.

Due to having a car port I rarely charge it, which I know BMW would tell me would resolve the problem, but do these readings seem right?

I get about 200 miles on a full tank of fuel, £45 which seems low to me for a 2016 car, but is it due to lots of town driving?

I know the battery add extra weight, but its usually only me in the car, so how heavy can it be?

Any help/guidance anyone can give will be helpful!

MPG will be terrible if you don't charge it as the battery element adds to the economy, without it you won't get close to the figures.

Worth posting in the EV forum; there is already a thread for the 330e.

I have a C350e, which is pretty similar. I charge mine everyday, but on long journeys my mpg can be as low as 35 (if I'm driving fairly hard). Normal motorway and town driving over 50-100 miles (on empty battery) usually sees about 40-45 mpg.

The petrol engine alone should be returning 30mpg at a minimum.

Simple things first; you're not running around in sports mode, are you? In sports+ and with a heavy foot, I reckon I could get mine down to 20-25mpg....

ETA - I park mine on the drive and still charge it via the 3-pin plug. I just wrap the plug with a plastic bag when not in use (to keep the rain off). I would highly suggest charging it if entirely possible. Even if you need to use an extension lead (make sure you fit an RCD); it will make a huge difference.

If you are never charging it, it is just a heavy 2.0t petrol. If it was charged im sure a lot of the town miles would be on electric only and the mpg figures would be quite different?

Has a hybrid electric car but doesn't charge it and wonders why his petrol engine isn't returning high mpg. Hmmm

Its in ECO.. with sensible driving... so really it is a heavy 2.0L. Should I get better than 20-25MPG? If so is it worth taking into BMW?

The carport is 25 meters from my outside socket. I do have a 25m lead, but its annoying running the cable out all the time otherwise I would charge it more often!

^What he said.

I'd be quite happy with 20-25mpg around town in a big and heavy 2.0 petrol car. Even more so with 40+ on a run.

Definitely a car that's designed to be charged up, why would you even buy one of these if you weren't going to charge it? confused

Charge it up - get a sparky to put a socket in your car port.

There isnt anything wrong with your car, and if most of your driving is town, you'll gain massively from using it in electric mode for that element.

My BMW F30 328i (2.0 turbo petrol) returned 20 - 25 mpg around town, so yes its normal. You need to charge it if you want better economy.

Fuelly suggests 60mpg average from the 9 users that are uploading. I suspect you bought the wrong car given your circumstances.

To be fair, it is a common theme with the German hybrids at the minute.

A lot of guys where I work have picked up the C350e or 330e for the BiK relief and not bothered to charge them; then they wonder why they aren't seeing any savings and why they are having to fill up every few days.

It's only a hybrid if you charge it....

Already pointed out, but what you have at the moment is a a very expensive 320i petrol 4 pot, with a boot full of heavy equipment.

You need to actually use the electric element of the powertrain in order for it to make a positive effect on the economy!

Weight of a 330e = 1735kg
Weight of a 320i = 1430kg

The petrol engine is in the same state of tune as the 320i. Without charging, you're carrying the equivalent of four average adults everywhere with little advantage.

You have three choices. Plug it in regularly, accept the poor performance you have, or accept that it's not the right car for you and move on. (Assuming the tax incentive doesn't make it worth keeping, of course!)

The same weight as a 530d!!

So, the weight of a 530d, powered by a petrol engine, and no miracles are occurring? How odd....

You're not getting 21mpg while it's making 560bhp

Fair point well made.
