G-Wagens across Scotland: Time for Tea?

We're mucking around in the mud with G-Wagens; here's what Mercedes did earlier

Nikolai and Dan are messing about with four-wheel drive Mercedes in the mud at Millbrook today, Nikolai having conquered the supposedly unclimbable mud hill in a G-Class with Dan making various excuses about why he got stuck half way up while attempting to follow. Think Hamilton/Rosberg levels of competitiveness, just at slower speeds and with more mud.

The cars here are the ones Mercedes recently used on its off-road coast-to-coast across Scotland, as featured a couple of weeks back on PH and driven by Al Suttie. And the official video of the trip is playing on a loop at Millbrook and looks pretty cool, so we thought we'd share it with you here while Dan pleads with the instructors to be given one more go at the hill of doom.

See the vid here...

A small price to pay considering they will outlast both you and me.

Always thought Defenders were expensiveas they seem to have a shelf life.

Bit embarrassing for Land Rover that Mercedes came and did this in their back yard. Guess they were to busy selling extortionate final edition defenders and convertible evoques!

And now a G-Wagen in its modern natural environment

Hitting a kerb would be the limit.

And what's wrong with that? I'm sure they also wear a Rolex (or some other Swiss timepiece) that can go down so many thousand feet underwater - will they go? No. It's because they can that's the appeal.

The V12 is currently almost 274000 Euros before optional equipment.

Defenders do not have a shelf life. They are 100% modular.

I think G Wagen's are lovely but the 463's imho are over rated. The suspension on a Defender is rated to much higher load levels. Both lovely cars (from the experience of owning a Defender I've taken all over Europe on and off road, and considering getting my partner a G350 and having a look at one earlier in the year... granted not used the G off road).

I think the main reason they're so expensive is because they're still made in a very old fashioned way, like the Defender was. What Mercedes has done that Land Rover never successfully did, is make the G a premium product they could charge premium money for... so whilst Land Rover eventually cancelled the Defender as it didn't make enough profit, Mercedes are continuing to update and sell the G s they're charging 3x as much for it. Land Rover tried this with the SVX etc... and earlier V8 varients, but for whatever reason it never took off (I think because there's a fashion element in all cars, the G used to be an import special in California and celebrities starting importing them specially so it because a bit of a fashion thing, back in the late 90's).

A final edition Heritage = £30k.
Adventure = £43k
Autobiography = £60k.

These prices are extortionate when you're talking about a car that is very similar in design, and starts at £85k and goes to £150k?

FWIW, a Defender has a higher load ratio (so can carry more over rough terrain) than a 463 G Wagen (civilian ones), and if you wanted a fast, plush one... Twisted will do you versions from £50k-150k (150k = the Corvette engined one).

G wagon has a good reputation world wide , the land rover is a sick joke to people who's lives depend on off road travel , defenders are fine as a toy but when there is work to be done you don't want a land rover...

That video is utter rubbish, and was not as good as it made out "making history" or whatever it said..

I live on the doorstep to Salisbury plains and have taken a £1,000 landrover freelander through MUCH more mud and "off road"

HOLD THE PRESS!

Mercedes in driving over slightly bumpy road shocker!

I can only assume that PH was paid to post this because there must be a thousand better things to watch with one's tea than this PR drivel?
