Bit embarrassing for Land Rover that Mercedes came and did this in their back yard. Guess they were to busy selling extortionate final edition defenders and convertible evoques!
A final edition Heritage = £30k.
Adventure = £43k
Autobiography = £60k.

These prices are extortionate when you're talking about a car that is very similar in design, and starts at £85k and goes to £150k?

FWIW, a Defender has a higher load ratio (so can carry more over rough terrain) than a 463 G Wagen (civilian ones), and if you wanted a fast, plush one... Twisted will do you versions from £50k-150k (150k = the Corvette engined one).
G wagon has a good reputation world wide , the land rover is a sick joke to people who's lives depend on off road travel , defenders are fine as a toy but when there is work to be done you don't want a land rover...
Countless people have taken Defenders to the ends of the earth. A search using the words "defender expedition" brings up about a billion results.

You are talking bks in other words...and I expect you have zero practical experience of either car.

Cases in point:

The same route is a regular expedition route for Defender drivers = http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/72827-canni...

They're both good cars, however thinking a G is amazing just because Mercedes manage to get away with charging so much for it is akin to thinking Armani clothes are better than M&S clothes simply because one is more expensive than the other. They are both, ultimately, ladder chassis body on frame utility vehicles. The Defender is more modular, has more rugged suspension as standard, the G is more comfy, and has 3 locking differentials as standard. However the axle articulation in the D is better than the G, but they are both handmade and both essentially old fashioned designs... there are pros and cons to this. Pros being simpler, easier to fix, cons being panel gaps, not as comfy or packaged as well.

A small price to pay considering they will outlast both you and me.

Always thought Defenders were expensiveas they seem to have a shelf life.
Defenders do not have a shelf life. They are 100% modular.

I think G Wagen's are lovely but the 463's imho are over rated. The suspension on a Defender is rated to much higher load levels. Both lovely cars (from the experience of owning a Defender I've taken all over Europe on and off road, and considering getting my partner a G350 and having a look at one earlier in the year... granted not used the G off road).

I think the main reason they're so expensive is because they're still made in a very old fashioned way, like the Defender was. What Mercedes has done that Land Rover never successfully did, is make the G a premium product they could charge premium money for... so whilst Land Rover eventually cancelled the Defender as it didn't make enough profit, Mercedes are continuing to update and sell the G s they're charging 3x as much for it. Land Rover tried this with the SVX etc... and earlier V8 varients, but for whatever reason it never took off (I think because there's a fashion element in all cars, the G used to be an import special in California and celebrities starting importing them specially so it because a bit of a fashion thing, back in the late 90's).
Have you forgotten Range Rover?? They didnt need to update the defender because they had the RR, which even in Classic guise better then the G-wagen

True... Tbh I think the Defender get's a lot of slack on these forums, much like Lotus do. The British are great at talking our own products down and bigging up those of others.

We're the 4th largest economy in the World - yet half of us literally think that we'll fall into a dark hole unless we do whatever the EU says, and feel we have no bargaining points.
We have the 4th most menacing military capability in the World - yet we talk our armed forces down constantly, I've even heard people question whether we should be on the security council despite the fact... WE have 4th most capable military force in the World (behind only the US, China and Russia).
We essentially run European banking - our financial services industry dwarfs that of most other countries.

I think there's too much negativity about being British - Lotus create some cracking cars. The Defender has been around the world in many guises for decades, and it's in some ways a more capable car than anything else about - it has greater off road ability off the shelf than a Landcruiser 70 series, although arguably worse engines and reliability. It has greater ruggedness and load carrying capability vs. a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, although arguably worse off road ability off the shelf. It has vastly greater wheel articulation vs. a G class, although doesn't have the diff locks the G does (however these can be fitted aftermarket and the G needs them due to it's own lack of articulation due to stiff anti-roll bars.

The G class is a great car, and I'd have one in a heart beat IN ADDITION to a Defender, but it really does seem ridiculous when people who have zero experience of Defenders criticize the car and put anything German up on a pedestal, as if it's all things to all men, when for the most part they've simply bought into marketing.

The G500 4x4 Squared is approx. 230000 Euros. The 6x6 is no longer in production but has really appreciated in value on the used market.
