Reminds me of a video I saw on Youtube (Archie Hamilton for those interested). He had downpipes and a sports exhaust fitted to his A45 AMG and my god, it is dominated entirely by pops and bangs, you can barely hear the engine itself any more. He seemed very happy with the result though.

Even a stock AMG 45 is so fking awful that I felt genuinely sad when I first heard one. Artificial, overblown, noisy piece of st, that engine and exhaust combo.

Thanks - so a supercharger based car would sound similar to NA?
The exhaust will sound very much the same as a naturally aspirated lump but a supercharger will give a rather different induction noise and obviously the supercharger itself makes another noise on top of the usual engine noises (generally a rev-dependent whine).

A supercharged motor can sound even more larey than a NA, IMVHO. Because you're putting a bigger bang through it, like a turbo, but without the muffling effects of the turbo.

The main problem now is that noise regulations rob newer cars of the natural sound they make.... Turbo cars sound fantastic on a performance exhaust, as do many N/A cars... Personally I like the sound of most interesting cars, I don't get why there has to be so much hate between the sides of the argument rofl

Emissions regs etc, have you seen the length of some intake systems now?! Plus masses of NVH reduction removes the raw feel from cars now.

I think direct injection and plastic intake manifolds etc really make engines sound flatter and less musical.

The 335I sounds far better than the 330I in e9x form at least, the latest M3/M4 on the other hand sounds terrible for a six pot, how did they get it so wrong?

Generally speaking I would take a good na engine over a turbocharged one for both noise and drama, they are far more willing to rev and build power towards the top end whereas turbocharged cars peak far earlier so being able to rev them out seems somewhat pointless.

Having both a 4.7TT V8 & a 6.2 N/A V8 both with the exhausts liberated I have to say the N/A has a much richer note than the Twin Turbo engine the throttle response is also better, as good as the 4.7 sounds the N/A has it licked but the 4.7 counters with a nice induction noise & turbo flutter.

As a sidebar I'd say my brothers V8 M3 with it's Eismann system is a better note, than my E Coupe.

More like a wasp in a biscuit tin! It's a very tinny noise and I wasn't that keen on the noise my Z4M made either.

I prefer a more bass filled tone, and for me it sounded like a much smaller capacity engine than it actually was.

The M3 CSL is lauded to high heaven though so I'm certainly in the minority.
