RE: AMG GT R at the Nurburgring: Time for Coffee
Discussion
Michelin provides a extra sticky Cup2 for track use... Available on the GT R when it goes for sale, apparently.
Also it was a 4 degree celcius day, hence the need for tyre warmers and beneficial for the actual power output and tyre consistency towards the end...
Good car, good driver, excellent tyres, ideal conditions...

Come on. Ever tried taking a mountainbike up the trail along Kesselchen? Every ounce counts as a stone.
Bit of a mystery to me, this laptime. Same tyres, same driver.. 10 seconds out of a 488??
Perhaps Christian got lucky with some totty the night before this one.
Bit of difference between 1 human power and 600bhp though isn't there?! Have a look at 'Ring times in general and weight is not the deciding factor. Out and and out power, plays much more of a part in a time than weight. The Nissan GTR is 1700kg and sets a pretty reasonable time*Bit of a mystery to me, this laptime. - with more than likely, quite a bit more power than it should.

Granted. But if the weight comes up exponentially with the power the problem remains, doesn't it? Anyway, I get your point, the Ring is not the heaviest track for brakes either, which sort of comes down to the same thing.
The Nissan GTR is fast everywhere, and seems to defy the laws of physics. Like this AMG.
Especially the tight and twisty section after the Carroussel should be these cars' undoing, except that it isn't. Impressive.
Fantastic time, he lost some time going in narrow when being passed but then probably made it up in the "chase" subconsciously. I like that display, it showed he did a 7 min 14 the lap before so it seems you can lap all day sub 7 min 20 seconds. Remember all that hoo haa about the GT-R .....
I have to say when I see one of these on the road it looks wide and low and amazing, in video not so good.

Pause the vid at 23 seconds. Make it full screen
Note the wheels to the right of shot.
Notice the slicks fitted to the standard cars alloys.
If it looks too good to be true...

Sportauto also subsequently put up a higher detail shot of those 2 tyres which were very worn Cup2s. Note the wheels to the right of shot.

Shouldn't emphasize the "under 600hp" point. That's BS. The 645hp ZR1 just managed 294kph on the straight while this did 302.
Exactly this. I'm fairly confident that most of the 'Ring times that are 'record runs' a running more power than standard. I have it on reasonable authority that the Nissan that did that crazy time was running closer to 700bhp than the sub 600 it should have...Buy a copy of Sport Auto. They put every car on the dyno, same with this one. They even tell you what alignment the car has.
Top speed is just as much about aerodynamics as it is about power. Again, the 4 degree C air temperature will indeed have been beneficial for actual power output. Ideal conditions with the stickiest Cup 2 rubber, pre-warmed.

but its not surprising as the tyre is the performance bottle neck in most cars now

Indeed, and again it's the same tyre many of their competition use so it's not really giving the car an advantage when making direct comparisons. but its not surprising as the tyre is the performance bottle neck in most cars now

Not entirely true, these Cup 2 have a stickier compound for track use compared to 'regular' cup 2's as Sport Auto states in the youtube comments. Impressive time and, yes, the tyres did help in that. Onehp said:

That was a brilliant lap. The way the GT3 car walked past and fked off into the distance was ace though
Yes it did come past very quickly but that is a very technical section so the race car with less weight and more downforce was at a big advantage. If you notice after the bridge and through Bergwerk and up to Carousel there was not much in it as that is a much faster section but after that and through Brunchen the race car was gone.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
