Hello Everyone,

I'm a bit far away from Germany, as I'm located in Dubai, but I still have a valid subscription of Sport Auto and it's delivered even here to Dubai.

First of all, congrats to this insane lap. I'm critically reading Sport Auto for about 8 years. If I remember correctly, the have tested the 918 with 7:14 around the ring. The driver was not Christian but Horst, who was during this lap already a bit 'dated'.
Usually, the laps of Sport Auto are a bit slower 05-14 seconds to what the manufacturers are able to do. Usually they pump up the boost of the turbo, putting a single, lunatic driver into the driver seat and voila! You have a new record lap sir!

THe Sport Auto laps also depending on the confidence of the driver. Christian had the Huracan in the Super Test recently, he reported that he had no confidence into the ABS of the car, therefore the lap was slow.

Many readers have complaint the fact over some years, that the manufacturers are giving a specially prepared car for the Sport Auto Super Test. Sport Auto addressed this complaint that the tests became more and more detailed, they are now even measuring the camber and geometry of the suspension settings and comparing them to the stock settings. They also addressed the fact that the cars GPS knows the power test centers around the ring, so that the engine power is decreased on a indoor test cycle.

Summing up, I'm quite confident that the car and the tyres are stock, if not, it will be objectively announced in the next Sport Auto. Furthermore my concern is, if you put a lunatic driver behind the steering wheel of this car, at perfect conditions, it can closely go towards the 7:00 mark, which will put the time close to 918.

I think that only the sky is the limit here! Looking forward for the time of the Aston RB 001.

Regards,

Robert

I'm very impressed I really didn't think Mercedes would build a car that can do this without being mid engined

the engine sits between the wheels so its technically front mid engined

Awesome lap where the transmission and suspension seem almost perfectly matched to the Ring. There seemed to be almost no time when the engine was off boost (not in it very broad sweet spot) and the suspension coped unbelievably well with vertical load/unload with almost no drive-line flare. Incredible set up driven with awesome commitment! I am left wondering how long I would keep my licence with the green monster on UK roads... How could you not use that!

It wasn't Mercedes doing the lap, so things like tyre warmers seem unlikely. Whether press cars are artificially tweaked beyond normal customer cars is probably one of those questions which will never get adequately answered.
You could see then on the car in the video?
Sorry I meant it's unlikely that it was done differently between the Ferrari time quoted and the Merc because the runs were done by the same people. I have no idea what preparation they do (I can't watch the video at work) but I don't think it really matters as long as its consistent.

Slightly off-topic, but I'd always assumed they did a warm-up lap for these things to find the limits and get everything up to temperature?

See below link, it appears quite a bit of preparation went into this lap, tyre warmers included.

For those comparing this time to the 488, it is worth noting that the relatively low ambient air temp at the time this lap was completed in the AMG GTR was perfect for both feeding the turbocharged engine and preventing the tyres from overheating, a big advantage given its weight. Would be interesting to repeat in the summer with an ambient air temp in the high 20's.

If you put your name down now you might get an allocation but you'll have to be patient.
