I'm an Audi fan and run a diesel A7 as my DD, but I like this Alpine because it's not an Audi - I have an Aston as my main sports car but I want something cheaper (to run & to buy) that's still that bit different to the norm, fun, to keep a few miles off the Aston, that I can also do the occasional track day in. I wasn't impressed with the finished execution of the Alfa 4C, the GT4 is a fair bit more expensive and I am put off by the image of an Audi TT. I was actually considering a used Abarth Biposto....
I'm intrigued if you considered the Lotus Elise or Exige as this sort of cash would get you into a Exige Sport 350, which is also mid engined, light weight but has a super charged V6. I'd expect the Exige to be considerably faster on the track than the Alpine and sharper to drive.
I have considered them. I am hoping that the Alpine is just a touch more refined than an Exige if I want the option of a long road trip, but I may be kidding myself ! As you say, no question the Lotus would be better on track but that's normally only once or twice a year. I also like the idea of a lightweight track special and in fact recently looked at the 2-eleven. But when push comes to shove, I just can't see myself taking a car like that to say Le Mans for the weekend (living in Manchester, I have a 250 mile trip just to get to Calais). So I've unfortunately come to accept that as I'm not 21 (or even 31) any more, I would need something a bit more practical so I'm focussing on the idea of a car with personality & fun rather than outright top speed, track times, etc - that's what appeals to me about the Alpine ever since the first concept came out - it's just that bit different.

Hopefully this will be a genuinely French and quirky Alpine from Renault.

Wasn't it originally supposed to be one of Tony Fernandes' sportscar pipedreams, in conjunction with Caterham? Presumably shared along the lines of MX5 and 124.

I think the Alpine re-birth is fantastic news unless you're really grumpy, as no one has to buy a new one.

It increases the choice of light(ish) mid-engine road cars.

Based on how positive the move to FI has been on the 718 from a handling POV by making the chassis more lively and challenging, then I'm OK that it's turbo charged, particularly based on RenaultSport's ability to give turbo engines decent power delivery in stark contrast to VAG's typical power delivery (Porsche excepted).

Shame there is no manual option though, that's bad. But it might come.

Can I suggest a lightly used S1 Evora?

...or just someone who'd appreciate a choice...maybe? I mean there have been one or two cars that have been enjoyable to drive with a 'stick'...even defined by it...
....track driving makes sense...on road...choice would be welcome.
Choice should always be welcomed.

Baby A7 with teeny weeny wheels. I'm sure the earlyier undisguised prototypes looked better.!?

The deposits are fully refundable but it would appear orders are going well on the app

You pick a number out of those remaining, then pay a 2,000 euro refundable deposit. RHD cars are stated as being for 2018 delivery, but you can still pick a launch car and still choose from all the numbers which one assumes as with most manufacturers for ltd ed cars these days, will have nothing to do with the order the cars are built in

You have to choose your country on the app before you pick a number and several countries (including perhaps not unsurpringly France, but also Belgium, Spain, Netherlands and Portugal) have no more left. Alpine have already officially stated that the French allocation for this launch edition is sold out

They have therefore either decided on an actual split between each country, or at the very least a maximum allocation for each country

The numbers you can choose from are not allocated to specific countries. There are currently only c. 350 left between the countries that you can still order from (including the UK), out of the 1,955 that went on sale, assuming none have been held back of course

I actually quiet like the styling - it looks pleasingly subtle as modern sports cars go, not a ludicrously big wheel or stupid surface crease in sight as far as one can tell through the camouflage. I've no interest in owning one with these specs, but I think they've done a credible job so far.

I'm really keen on these, but having had a couple of RenaultSports, I'm waiting for the 2nd revision when they're ironed the issues out.

I think it looks fantastic though, they just need to be careful with pricing in the UK if they're going to sell any.
