Brokers will get you one to your own spec at similar money,
I'm about to come to the end of a 2 year lease on a golf R and previously used an M135i pool car for 6 months in my last job.
The engine is better in BMW and the interior bits and pieces, especially seats are nicer not to mention idrive being much better than the crappy touch screen thing in the golf. However, give me any of my favourite B roads either wet or dry and I'd rather be in the Golf.
There might not be the same character from the engine but the latest ea888 is pretty bloody good. However, the things that clinch it for me are the fact that the chassis and suspension set up in the golf just seems to be so much more resolved than the BMW. The steering in the golf is a little more direct and you get more sense of what's going on, the steering in the pre LCI M135i was some of the most vague I've ever experienced. It also had a nasty habit of building up a constant sort of bounce effect from what felt like mismatched spring rates to damping on uneven British B roads. There's a PH review of the M135i which brings up some of the same findings.
If you do get an R get a DSG as the manual clutch won't last long if you plan on a remap.

The drive is very good and gives you tons of confidence , I had a lot of fun on my test drive .
OP, If you go for the golf try and get one with leather interior as the cloth looks a bit cheap for a premium car

Just about sub 25k cars for base 3dr elsewhere, if prepared to take finance, though probably very few pre-April & VED changes build slots available now. Bowler deals aren't even best of obvious dealer deals last time I looked IIRC.
Sub 25k? Where is that at please?Have had both, Golf R till October this year then took a good deal on a new pre-reg M135i.
It really depends what you want, which is a pretty vague answer lol
I prefer the M135i because I tend to only drive at weekends. It's more edgy, unpredictable and you never quite trust pushing it... but the seating position is fantastic, the engine is a real winner and it's the best sounding hatchback out there.
The Golf R is far more composed, and as a daily driver with the DSG box, it's pretty unbeatable. It inspires a lot more confidence and I've no doubt that it's quicker point-to-point over a B road. The down side the driving position isn't great (feels more like you are sitting 'on' the car than in it) and it doesn't sound very good.
Tech and build quality wise there isn't much between them. The iDrive in the BMW beats the Golf's touch system, plus the BMW seats are nicer. But the general cabin design is better in the Golf, with the BMW feeling a little dated.
So, in summary, daily driver go for the Golf R. Weekend warrior, go for the BMW

Think you've summed it up nicely there Jim. It really depends what you want, which is a pretty vague answer lol

The Beamer's engine makes a lovely sound compared to the golf but then that gearbox in the golf was delicious .
As you say comes down to intended useage
I'd love a golf r. But residuals have to come into it if buying privately. 135 bmw's are amazingly strong. R's are an unknown quantity, and seem to be at the same level if not lower than the gti with '15 cars at £22k. Who knows what this year will bring with another flood of lease cars.

With the new golf out next year I think you're right The most accurate review of the BMW that I've read. It's a review for the M140i, but the essence of the M135i is captured very well too:

I have a new 5 door M140i coming in January at £27.8k with an automatic, sunroof, HK sound and a few other options. I don't want to plug another forum on here, so do a google search for TRL Deals and you will find more information. It's the best car buying experience I have ever had, no vultures trying to sell me overpriced GAP or paint protection nonsense.where are these 27k cars?? list is 33k isnt it?
