I'm talking on a like-for-like basis. Take the 997.2, why would I buy one from you if I can get the same condition super well prepped, with a 6 month bumper to bumper warranty from someone like RPM Technik?
It doesn't always work indeed !!

But cars are never like-for-like, thank god, otherwise I probably wouldn't have managed to sell for more than the trade. I find the level of prep from "reputable" dealers often poor compared to the condition I sell (and occasionally buy) my cars privately. I'd happily buy a 997.2 privately with a Porsche warranty. I'd pay more than with a RPM warranty. And I would get to meet the previous owner, which if he has owned it for a while, means a lot to me on such a car. Each to their own though, no axe to grind.

Recent experience.....Had a Fiat Grande Punto (7 years old, 75k) and were looking to get new car. Priced on WBAC just to get idea, horrified to see £1050, (this was Oct). Forward to Nov, and enquired at dealer about new car and asked for idea of trade in (this was over 'phone), was told £950-1100, and not pleased. Looked on Autotrader and dealers trying to sell similar at £1550, private trying at £1300. Decided to look at new car anyway and (ok I'd done a full clean inc engine bay by hand) dealer said £1100, and also we got £400 off new car (and others weren't advertising as much off new) - so decided to cut our losses and go for it. 5 weeks later and old car isn't taxed, so I guess it's still sitting on a forecourt somewhere?

I was looking at Jags and Mercs recently, and nearly all were advertised by traders.

Nearly all of them were over priced and did not have the spec I wanted.

Eventually I found a Merc at a dealer that I liked and PX'd my old Merc as it had a few minor faults, that I would not be comfortable with selling privately.

I have always sold privately as well. As for buying, I see a few private sellers are pricing their cars at trade level or more.

Problem is that if 80% of the cars are trade sales, these people think theirs should be at the same price point when in reality between trade and retail.

It's going to be a long, long search unless I am more open on make and model.

If traders are asking £1500 for them, why were you surprised of trade bids of around £1000-£1100?

Did the dealer knock much off for the faults?

Dealer hardly looked at the car. Just checked for any warning lights, there were none, and I got more than WBAC were offering.

I was surprised with the first value before I'd looked at the going price being asked. That's why I decided to trade in, because I considered I'd be unlikely to match it and could be sitting on it for a while.

Maybe I'm trying to sell the wrong type of car
rofl

Still, next car sales will be wbac or dealer.
There's a whole load of factors that influence it - where you live, what kind of car you're selling, where the car is advertised, as well as luck!

Maybe I just got lucky with my last two sales and I'm due a whole bunch of timewasters next time I try to sell a car...
Its probably because im between 20 and 30 and the sellers that arrive probably think I'm wet behind the ears, Don't get me wrong I'm not a know it all, But if i put a common car up to for £650 with 12 months mot and no faults, it doesn't need 'taking off my hands for £150'

I shouldn't be due a timewaster for a few years now then rofl

Cars still sell privately even 2 weeks before Christmas. Just sold mine today out of the Autotrader for 9k, which was the asking price.

I've sold all my cars on eBay. I think it helps that they're normally cars someone will really want. Never had any issue.

Sold my mums Corsa too, again no issue really. Few emails offering £1500 less but you just ignore them.

If the car and price is right and you do a good advert it will sell.

I'm seeing a lot of cars priced far too highly. Like you say, some are virtually the same as dealer prices.

So WBAC offered £50 less than a dealer who sold you a new car and this surprised you?

Bloody hell, I'm losing the will to live with some posters!!!

Right.. Let's just explain this properly as I haven't done so well with the previous notes. 1) I looked at WBAC and was surprised the car was worth so little. 2)Got a similar "guide price" unseen from dealer. 3)When looking at adverts I was surprised how little extra may be realised by attempting to sell the vehicle myself 4)Decided to part-x vehicle (something I've never done before) because of 3 and the part-x offered. Hope that explains
