What the VXR8? Really? I always thought they were manual like the Monaro!
No, the Rover 75 V8 is automatic only

Maserati Quattroporte?
Neither affordable to buy or to run.
You can pick one up for <£15k, which is affordable for some people.
If you've got a budget in mind, why not share it? Are we talking sub £1k, less than £5k, £5-10k? Give us a clue...

any other criteria we don't know about?

'affordable' is subjective - how much are we talking about?

In Germany at least, anything vaguely roadworthy is northwards of €2000, whereas in the UK you've a selection of shed money cars at a grand

big cheap manual LHD saloons that haven't been abused are hard to find, more so the more things you rule out
It's true that cars here are more expensive than in the UK. But with €2000 you can buy a more than roadworthy car.

I'm looking in the €3000-4000 range.

Why does it need to be so big if you already have a Passat estate?
It just makes things easier so we don't have to fuss about the children and who has which car a the moment. I just sold my 2-doors for that reason.

Except they are all older than 2000, or there's a brand new model, but nothing in between.

But a 1997-98 run-out model would probably do everything the OP wants

Above the budget and even if it wasn't it's a diva, expensive to run and unreliable. Not what I'm looking for. I don't need necessarily Toyota reliable. But also don't need something notoriously unreliable, hard to work on and expensive to repair.

You should consider a 5 series.

Ah I see! I only suggested the Rover rather thant he MG because I thought it was a more ridiculous suggestion for someone who's rejected the Jag on the grounds of image. biggrin

It has to be said, there's a good reason people in this market tend to buy the 5-series.

Makes sense. Criteria very very narrow then - I think something's going to have to give otherwise you risk buying a lemon. Volvo V70 would be a good shout, for example.

I can also report an E39 5 series makes a nice family car biggrin

Got to love threads like this - OP sets next to impossible criteria to meet, flat out dismisses all suggestions for illogical reasons and then gives contributors attitude when he is questioned on the subject further...

Your choices are (using the mid ninties as a cut off point):
BMW 3/5 series
Jaguar S Type V6 or ninties XJ6
Lexus IS200
Mercedes C/E Class -
Opel Omega
Volvo 740 or 940.

That's it.

Almost all of them are going to be exceptionally hard, if not impossible to find, there's a large probability that they will have lived a hard life due to the attraction such a car will hold for wannabe drifters and none are particular good lookers, but then you're coming from a passat? I think some perspective may be required.

If you dont like any of those cars, if they are too small, or too old, or not styled to your tastes or are too difficult to find, tough.

Either revise your criteria or get the spanners and start planning a manual conversion on a car that you do like.

Because I already have an AWD and I don't want FWD in such a large car. This is to replace my prior car which was a 2-door RWD manual.

You've missed out the TX1 and TX2 ;-)
4 door saloon, RWD, available in auto and manual. Cheap to buy and run :-)

Nothing wrong with FWD in a Volvo S/V70 or S80, plenty to be found and at really discount pricing.
