If I bought an MG BGT, could me, Mrs H and H junior get in it?

He's one year old, but the size of a 2 year old, Mrs H dainty. I was thinking me driving, Junior in the passenger seat in his car seat and Mrs H crammed in the back.

It'd be a second car just in case.

We had 6 in my old BGT on the way to Hampstead Fair, the day of Live Aid. Needless to say the police did pull us over and gave us a light-hearted telling off. laugh

It was quite cramped. hehe

I really don't think Mrs H will be happy in the back, unless she is really tiny and does not mind sitting sideways- there is NO legroom and very little headroom. (And she will have no seatbelt)
My solution, (18 years ago) was:
Remove the back seat squab(it just comes out;) you will find seat belt mountings designed for the front belts in a Roadster (car originally designed as an open car).
Fit a lap belt to these (if you can find a suitable specialist belt fitter).
Then, the child seat will fit centrally in the back.
You need to leave the seat squab out, because you will need every inch of headroom for the child seat- you will need to check measurements to see if it's possible. I had a some difficulty finding one small enough.

Good luck with it- MGB's are a lot of fun at legal speeds!

it used to be easy enough.

nowadays the child seats you need limit these cars' useability greatly.
I guess its no bad thing, just change and there's nothing more constant than change.

The idea above about the rear centre seatbelt sounds good, just to add to it I've seen isofix retrofit kits which could be useful, I don't how good/legal they are though.

In our CGT we used to put the carry cot across the rear bench behind the seats. Used to be a nice fit. I guess you can't do that these days, how did we all survive! p.s. No, your wife won't squeeze in the back hehe

We used to have the cot across behind the seats in our Ginetta G15! A car hardly little more than the height of a bus tyre!
Another G15 owner at the time, Roy Burrell from Coventry, the Ginetta was his only mode of transport- he used to take all his family (wife and three kids) in his, plus their luggage(!) when holidaying. There are pics of him out there by his car but can't find them at the moment.

I could not have got 5 in mine - the roll bar would have got in the way!

In fact, here is a pic of mine at Donington at the end of an event in 1981, at the top of the hill when the cot was behind the seats with our 6 month old! That was a 206 mile round trip. Almost unthinkable today with no protection. That thing on top of the roof is a rear boot spoiler that had been made for me, somehow that came back home with us inside the car too.

Blooming good show! Mind you perhaps I should have also added that our red setter used to climb in the back and stick his head out the sunroof! biggrin

Way back in the late 70s Lady S and I used to squeeze both sprogs in the back of the V8 BGT - and I do mean squeeze !!!!
Don't know how we managed it really and we didn't worry about seatbelts in those halcyon days smile
I'm pretty sure this was the very last occasion before we / they decided enough is enough.

Thank you everyone.

It seems as fatherhood has arrived I'm expected to have a sensible car!

I looked at one of these too but decided it really wasn't a good fit for 3. Still looking but nothing seas to give the combination of classic styling and enough practicality

Used to be no problem in a Roadster. 5 even. 2/3 sitting on edge of boot, feet behind front seats! You could even do that in a Midget I think.

Frowned upon nowadays.

Indeed.

I still have a vivid memory of the best friend of the couple that lived next door to us, turning up with his brand new, just collected from the dealer BRG Austin-Healey 3000, and with me and the lad from next door sitting up on the edge of the boot, feet behind the seats, and going off for a blast up the A40.
As said, frowned upon nowadays.

Off to the Skoda dealership with you, sir!

I hear the Octavia estate (DERV) is unbelievably sensible.

Congratulations on fatherhood. smile

Fatherhood is amazeballs!

Mrs H drives a CR-V, tres sensible! I hate it! My two cars are a Morris Minor, should be back on the road in a few days, and a Silver shadow that is going to be a while yet!

Was thinking I might change the Morris for something a bit quicker between now and the Shad being ready.

(Clearly this is just an excuse to go old car shopping)

Young people eh? I "upgraded" from the MGCGT to a Porsche 924 Turbo when my boys came along, it offered so much more usable space. biggrin
