I'll go out on a limb here against the trend, and say I hate these things. They look like a Halford's "bitsa." I'm sure from a performance point of view they're incredibly quick, but I fear I'm stuck in the past with what must be rose-tinted glasses. I prefer the old rivalries of Subaru vs Mistubishi in the group A days, in cars that were less powerful, and had less aero, meaning the performance difference must be made up by the human element.
These things have me thinking they're more aeroplane than car.
To be fair These things have me thinking they're more aeroplane than car.
and they went OK.

Looks the part - I think I prefer the simpler silhouette of Group A or 90s WRC but that's probably a function of the era I was brought up in as much as anything else.
Good to see a front line driver in an M Sport car and also and interesting test of the champ away from the full fat hyper funded VW program.
Interesting times all round

Aside from its rather exciting looks the thing that I took from the blurb was "it sounds fantastic"
I want to hear this thing growling and farting its way up that pass.
Can someone get Bernie on the phone and slap him with a wet kipper. Noise is an important part of the spectacle of Motorsport.

The R5 cages differ - the FIA didn't allow a WRC carry over.
I sit corrected, I wasn't aware of that the cage differed. Guess I just assumed they had one set cage style for all the cars, cheaper on design and build no? . It's just the rrc that has the capability of being upgraded to full fat then as has been done to a few cars running in national championships. I'm torn.
On the one hand it looks fab, how i imagine Grp B cars would have looked if the category hadnt been banned back in 86.
On the other hand, it seems like the cars are now very technical (re expensive) which may put off new manufacturers.
The cars are not very representative of what you can buy in the showroom. Now it may be that the 'win on sunday, buy on monday' ideology is long since gone. But if thats the case, why base the car on a road going variant? Why not just go the whole hog and go back to building bespoke rally cars (e.g. RS200).
Final point, with all that aero gubbins glued to it, i am guessing that these things go fastest in a straight line. Which can only mean less sideways action. Again, i may be a dinosaur for wanting to see that kind of stuff, but its what i grew up with.
I will keep an open-ish mind, but rallying for me has been disappointing too many times in recent years

That rear diffuser will be very popular with the memorabilia collectors .
I like the new WRC cars and specs, too bad VW left .
M-Sport have got previous with this, when they launched the original Fiesta WRC the rear bumpers detached very easily. I remember seeing about 6 per car set aside in service, and they even ended up putting another number plate sticker on the rear crash beam underneath for when (not if) it got ripped off I like the new WRC cars and specs, too bad VW left .

I have been wondering for years now why manufacturers have any interest at all in WRC. On the one hand it looks fab, how i imagine Grp B cars would have looked if the category hadnt been banned back in 86.

To be clear thats not because i dont dig rally. I did road closures/marshaling for every single round of the local rally championship here in Australia (aside from when i was at Le Mans/Goodwood). I am a huge supporter of the sport.
I just dont see the benefit for them. VW and Citroen have dominated in recent years but when was the last time you heard them shouting about it? And is Citroen or VW selling any more cars because of it? Almost certainly no.
