I had a white one fly past me yesterday on the M1. I have to say it looked very cool. Like a touring car for the road... Yes they're an acquired taste but then again, everyone slated the old Focus RS for looking too 'Halfords', and now they slate the new one for not being 'Halfords' enough.

Love it for what it is.

It's a good point, manufacturers just can't win but the CTR does have some shockingly bad design features.

Brilliant, I love these.

I like how outlandish and over the top it is, if you want dull and bland buy a Golf-R/GTi/GTD, at least these look like a hot hatch.
And another, that makes it about the 20th time in this thread already. Who says originality is dead hey? smile

In fact, can we just copy and paste the bit in bold as a reply to anyone who dares to suggest they don't like the Type R's styling, would probably save a bit of time. wink
The reason the Golf GTi/R gets mentioned is probably because they are much more subtle (some might even say classy). I've driven a GTi and I don't have any issues with how it looks or drives. The Type R will always get noticed, whereas most of it's rivals can slip under the radar.

My point was more that posts like the above insinuate that if you don't like the Type R, you MUST be boring and therefore the only choice is a Golf.

I find the Golf as dull as ditchwater and actually like aggressive looking hot hatches but the type R isn't just aggressive, it's badly styled. It seems we've lost the ability to do tastefully aggressive. I always sight the example of the 147 GTA. Wide arches, nice body kit that makes it obviously stand out from a run of the mill 147 and yet it doesn't need to resort to weird and uneccesary adenda, creases, slats, spoilers etc

I think the styling was always going to struggle given the base car it is built on.

If they kept the original wide arch and integrated rear wing/diffuser I would have had one in a flash, but the stick on arches and wing just make it look like a base model with tat stuck on.

I am all for body kits and I would say I am part of the "JDM Scene" but it just feels cheap coming from a manufacturer.

Ummm, well the next one is in much the same style (though the overall base proportions are different).

It might look better without the rear wing. The DC5 was available with a duck-flap instead of the wing.

The FK Civic has hidden rear door handles but this new one doesn't. Why do car designers keep flip-flopping on design features? Do they do it to justify their massive salaries and keep themselves in a job?

Wow, I kind of like that. I have seen the normal 1.5L turbo Civic version of that body style in the US as they are already out and in person it actually looks better than the photos. The downside is the large plastic honeycombs in the bumpers which don't have holes so seems kind of pointless. Otherwise, they are pretty sharp in person and way better than the current Euro styling.

This Type R was yet another example of a 'prototype/concept' car failing to meet expectations, the VW Scirocco was the same.

When this Type R was being showcased with that nice rear wing and the proper flared rear arches I was driving an EP3, and this was on my radar for potential next car, then it was released, in all it's awfulness, and I ended up in a Focus ST instead (no RS at the time). The 2017 model isn't any better. The front end looks brilliant, very aggressive and purposeful, then you scroll to the photo of the rear, and it looks like it was designed by a Dragon Ball Z loving 5yr old.

On an entirely unrelated note, I wish Ford would make this:

Yeah i like the look of that Ford. I like the current Type-R (with all its wings and spoilers) but don't like this new one above for some reason!

To labour the point a bit more, you can get a sense of the forthcoming one's proportions at about the 3:20 mark in this video https://youtu.be/YFehimP8rnk.

The proportions on the next one actually look a bit better IMO, just wish they offered a slightly more subdued one without the huge spoiler and all the other stuck on tat.

I really like the FK2, it's nice to see a hot hatch that looks wild these days. The next model looks even better, like a re-imagined Impreza hatch.

Seems to be a lot of car design experts on here. Most of the people who have commented slating it probably haven't seen on in the flesh. I own one of these and think they look fantastic, it gets loads of attention and not heard anyone say anything negative about it.

As for the fk2 concept with regards to the wing, it dropped off in crash testing so that's why Honda dropped it. They really did want to make it though, the rear wing on the existing car looks fantastic. Personally I love the fact that it looks completely different on the road. It's equally amazing to drive as well as it looks. Very driver focussed for a fwd car, the handling is unreal in the dry and not bad in the wet. Running costs are pretty much identical to my old Fn2.

I'm the opposite. I'm not keen on the current one, but the new one looks fantastic.
