It might not work for you, perhaps you're simply too tall, but it does work as a small 2+2. Of course it can't match a 3 series (or a RX8, but that's always been an exception), but saying the rear seats are useless is plain wrong.
The vast majority of 2+2s over the years only fit kids, or adults at a squeeze if the front occupants are willing the bring their seats forward a bit.

It'll do for quick trips to the pub and to school and back etc. That alone makes it worth having and moves it away from the MX5 imo.
This exactly. I have an MX5 and the absolute impossibility of taking a 3rd passenger means it gets used less than a 2+2 where I could just say "look, we aren't going far so either sit sideways a bit and put your legs over there, or squeeze in behind the passenger". In addition, 2+2 seats are designed around having a lower seat and raised feet, to give better packaging even if it IS less comfortable after a while.battered said:

Who else sells a rwd coupe with a real manual gearbox for 24k
Problem for Toyota seems to be, not many people seem to want a rwd coupe, just a car with bragging rights (mines faster than yours).
Would be very interesting if they did a supercharged version with 350hp to see if it suddenly became the darling car of the fast car masses
But it probably would ruin it.

It may have not sold well in the uk but in the rest of the world it seems to have sold very well. Would be great fun on uk roads - perfect even. Suppose it didn't sell well as it was quite expensive in the uk. Not so in other markets.
ETA - A few other things that get mentioned a lot about the 86/BRZ.
Engine note is rubbish - disagree here. For a four cylinder it sounds good. Especially if you pull that little cotton wool ball thingy from the induction tubing to the cabin. Great warmly/zingy motor. OK, it's not as fun to wring out as an old school Honda VTEC but good nonetheless. Agreed though the flat spot is annoying but encourages you to wring its neck more.
Steering isn't great - really don't get this. Steering has decent feel and the best feature of the car is how quick the steering is. Makes it so easy to play with mid bend or catch little drifts. An over-used term but it really is go-kart like and IMO makes it such fun to drive. My other car is a 911, which is great steering feel, but nowhere near as quick or fun as the BRZ's.
Slow - It's an NA revvy engine. Opposite of what most modern engines are. You just have to keep it on the boil. Never feels slow on track days as you are always at high revs.
Look crap - IMO they look great. Front and side profile is great. Looks simple but with a Japanese aggression, unlike the previous generation MX5s. Wheels are too small and tucked into the arches too far. Rear light design is also a bit crap.
Standard Prius tyres are great for the road as they have such little grip at reasonably low speeds. Useless on track, and the reason EVO rated it less than 5 stars, because once they lose what modest grip they have, they just slide and squeal like mad. Kind of off/on grip levels.

Not sure it is ideal for British roads. Our roads are fairly terrible (huge traffic problems and badly maintained). A car needs to do it all in this country - comfort, speed and decent handling for the few times you get some clear road.
Don't tar the rest of the county with the terrible roads down south. Lots of free space every day for me.Squadrone Rosso said:
Good roads here in South Wales. Out to play this morning with my mate in his Boxster following.
Very slippery up the mountains!
Oh, for me Wales was my driving playground for many years. Very slippery up the mountains!
Living in Shrewsbury, I spent many a day driving to places to go canoeing.
Fantastic open A roads, dramatic mountain roads and of course, the forest roads
Had a run from Shrewsbury to Bala late last year over the rhinogs and the roads haven't changed a bit .
The 86 btw looks better than the Boxter.

It's great down here! You can't say that about a Porsche on PH though....lolLiving in Shrewsbury, I spent many a day driving to places to go canoeing.

Great post OTM. I agree it looks great - I agree the engine is fine on track. I agree the steering is superb, loads of detail and feel. I still think it sounds like a 1973 coffee grinder and is mapped like one !ETA - A few other things that get mentioned a lot about the 86/BRZ.

I think I'd rather my 86 sounded like a coffee grinder than a fart in a drain pipe which the majority of Turbo cars sound like and that includes the wife's Polo GTi 😎Gary C said:

Ok, so turning that around, who wakes up wanting a brand new rwd coupe with a real manual gearbox and has "just" £24K in cash to spend?Who else sells a rwd coupe with a real manual gearbox for 24k
Clearly not too many....
There are a WORLD of better alternatives if you're prepared to buy USED. Or are we also saying part of being "purist" is only buying new

Oh, yes, because a GT86 is the perfect car and people who buy, say a used M3 for the same money can ONLY be doing it for bragging rights? Gary C said:

No one is saying it needs an extra 150BHP but is ANYONE saying that another 50BHP would ruin it?But it probably would ruin it.
Maybe these small amount of so called "purists" are happy with the power output and, for that matter, the power delivery, but maybe the real car enthusiasts and petrol heads and pistonheaders want a better overall balance?
Gary C said:
Especially as a 911 owner myself
Did you really just come out with that big pro GT86 speech and tell us about how all these other shallow people only buy a faster car for bragging rights and then just "happen" to NEED to tell us you've a 911???:rotfl:
Can you not see the irony there? Pot. Kettle. Black perhaps?
