£100K Garage: Russell Watts

Type R fan Russell wants another fast Honda back, with a M-car, Jap legend and Land Rover too

Name: Russell Watts
Previously owned: Mk1 Volkswagen Polo, Honda Civic DX (1991), Rover 216i coupe, Mazda 626, Mercedes W202 C-Class Estate, Honda Civic Type R (EP3), Honda Civic Type R (FN2), Honda Integra Type R (DC2 JDM) and a bunch of Ford Transit vans.
Currently owned: 2016 Ford Transit twin-cab Limited
On the shortlist: "Probably more Type Rs as I can't seem to get enough of them. Way down the line a Porsche or Nissan GT-R when I grow up and the kids move out (but not this time)! In the near future I'm looking to get something small and fun to run along side my van, a Fiesta ST or maybe the new Up! GTI when they release it as that looks mighty fun."

1970s: Datsun 280Z California
Cost
: £18,000
Balance: £82,000
Why I chose it: "Probably my all-time favourite classic Jap car with exception of the early GT-Rs, but they were out of budget. This would make the perfect weekend getaway car with the missus. Head off in search of some nice B-roads and would look the part parked up outside a nice country hotel. The car itself looks to be in great nick and I really like the colour too. Would have preferred a darker interior but it wouldn't put me off, that's for sure."

1980s: Land Rover 90 V8 SWB
Cost
: £14,995
Balance: £67,005
Why I chose it: "A practical, good looking all-terrain motor - what's not to like? Would be great for playing around on the Salisbury planes where my parents live (which is probably where it would stay, as it isn't much use in London). I love how practical they are, it's easy to clean inside and out tpp so perfect for kids and dogs. I also really like the way this one looks, it would turn heads around town and do the job in the fields. Perfect!"

1990s: Honda Integra Type R (DC2)
Cost: £5,000
Balance: £62,005
Why I chose it: "I had one (1996 model) which I loved. I sold it and regretted it! Amazing car that's surprisingly practical and easy to own, they also drive so well. Fantastic balance and the gear change is also brilliant, as you'd expect from Honda. The interior is pretty full on but made me smile every time I got in it. It also has fairly low running costs (with the exception of insurance) but that wasn't too bad last time I checked either. This would make a great weekend toy for track days and visiting car/motorsport events with mates (short ones in the back as it's a squeeze). It was a hard choice between this and the EK9 as I've always wanted one of those, but as a previous owner I want another go with this one."

2000s: BMW M3 CSL
Cost
: £59,995
Balance: £2,010
Why I chose it: "I wanted something reliable and with back seats to use as a daily car. Probably not everyone's idea of a daily but I think these things should be driven. None of my other choices would make sensible daily drivers but this thing would be a hoot on the B-roads and be happy on the motorway munching up the miles. I considered both manual Porsche 911 Turbos and V10 R8s but they're a bit flash and not as special either once you get down to the bare bones of what the cars are. Most people would think it was just an old 3 Series but I'd know and so would other enthusiasts."

Good choices

The Datsun was a school ride in the 70's. 5 kids packed in and hooning about.

The CSl seems to be the perfect M3 and look so good too.

Defender obviously

Good work.

Loving the Datsun but shift the wing mirrors to the doors!

CSL great but not worth the premium over a goo, regular M3 which would then give you more budget for another car or two!

Landrover I get it but probably not for me. Sorry.

Always been intrigued by the 'teg. Had an EP3 myself once..............

So the new format is 'Bunch of sheds plus one decent motor?'. Even worse than the last one.

The CSL is still a 3-series so not worth anything like the money. The engine is the special part and can be obtained in any M3 from that era.

Agree with some of the other comments. As an ex-CSL owner, in my opinion, you've wasted a huge proportion of your budget on believing in a hype!

Decent enough cars to own ...although a bit pointless in reality as a road-only car plus are you really a good enough driver and could you really afford to risk one properly on a track? Ok when they were for sale in their £20Ks. At the prices that they've been hyped up to now even more pointless.

I haven't. But I can imagine an E90 M3 with a few more carbon bits.

Just seen it's an E46. The price is a complete piss-take on that basis.

After driving a csl I don't think there over rated at all to be fair prices are high but there only dictated by the market!.
Is a mk2 escort really worth £20k? A m2 rs focus rs500 worth the £40k to £60k premium when it's in reality a matt black wrap, red calipers and a bit more power! The list really goes on there is a huge amount of over priced cars which is just the way the market is now! The csl is a genuine special edition and was completely re engineered drives better lots of different parts, at least this goes some way to explaining its higher price

The problem is that the 'market' gets led and manipulated....like cattle to a market! (pun intended) People can be made to believe they want/desire something yet they have no concept or first-hand experience of what that actual thing is really like.

Take just one example...E30 M3. Loads of people have been led to believe they are some kind of Holy Grail. They hanker after one and are convinced that they should pay exorbitant sums for one to be able to satisfy that mystical desire.

The truth? Not rare; a very good car in their day (i.e. 30 years ago!) but easily humiliated, in all respects on the road, by any half-decent family car these days; a very highly strung and high maintenance car to get anything near its best out of it; needs to be driven as if an uncaring hooligan is in charge of it to perform.

Q. How do I know?
A. Well, I owned this for 7 years.

Q. Why did I sell it?
A. Too flipping slow!

Q. Would you buy another?
A. Yes, because I think they look nice...and now that I've got better, more exciting (and cheaper) cars I would...if it were under £10K.

Exactly!

So, can you imagine how, after the thick end of an utterly embarrassing caning, on a public road, from a 3.2S Boxster (yeah...you can imagine the differnce!) that that was the final straw for me and the day that I decided that E30 M3s had completely 'had their day'. I put the car up for sale pretty much the next day.

Rage quit!

[As my sons tell me is the term in the Gaming World]

Pay how much for one now?.....I don't think so.

has a CSL because he "wants something reliable..."

The SMG system, subframe + headgasket will think differently!

This is a pretty one dimensional way of judging the worth of a car.

+1 As the owner of a 1973 Alfa GTV which has about 120bhp and weighs a ton or so, it is about enjoying it for what it is. Other modern sportscars are faster most of the time, but mine is beautifully set up, and on flat/ downhill alpine twisties has embarrassed much more powerful modern kit. Certainly though on most race tracks it would be slower given its very modest top speed and lack of outright acceleration.

But owning these beautiful old cars is about enjoying many things, not least their heritage. Enjoying the fact you aren't cosseted with abs, and traction control. It is about getting to know their foibles and their charms. Being beaten by a Boxster frankly misses the point by such a big distance, I'm glad your old Beemer is now in the hands of someone who enjoys it for what it is.
