I was going to post this one, it has't changed at all in the 41 years I've been alive. I called in a few years ago to have a diagnostic test done and had a chat with old Mr Jackson who was lovely but as deaf as a post. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Wilmslow+Rd,+M...
Gwyndaf Evans has a ford dealership in Dolgellau, snowdonia, Wales. It was quite small but it was re built a few years ago.
He even turned up with a low loader when a friend of ours managed to drive into a wall. Couldn't believe it when he hopped out of the cab!

These guys are terrific. Really friendly staff. The dealership is tiny but often has some really cool stuff parked outside - plus there's a Model T in the showroom too. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Wilmslow+Rd,+M...
There's a pretty tasty looking Mk2 Focus RS on their forecourt at the moment...makes me jealous having to pass it every day!
Seems there's still a teeny tiny Honda dealership in Dibden Purlieu

Used to be a Ford dealer at the petrol station next door IIRC

A dealership is a company that resells other peoples products
Eh? where did you get that definition from?So.... Fiat have a "dealership" around the back of Oxford Street in London..... What type of business is that then?
From their own website.....

When apple sells phones in its own shops, are the shops phone dealers? Or are the apple authorised dealers that they have in some cities phone dealers?
You do recognise the difference between a manufacturer selling their own product and selling it exclusively through intermediaries?
You can look up subway and McDonald's too.
In the UK some McDonald's stores are owned by McDonald's themselves. Others are franchises.
In the case of Subway, all of their stores are franchises.
I'm suspecting that you aren't a businessperson and just have a 9-5 job.
You walk into a showroom, you choose a car, you haggle on the price, you have your trade in appraised and a cost to change given..... this is a DEAL.... hence DEALER
You walk into Apple and buy a phone this is not a DEAL hence they are not DEALERS
You suspect very very wrong my friend

We're very much like this, slightly bigger than some of the garages on here but not by too much. We can probably fit about 18 cars in our showroom but 9 - 10 is a nice display. Our sales team is made up of myself, my Dad (also our DP) and my sister. We opened about 43 years ago and I'm told that Cliftonville was a thriving town then and ours was a busy road. This may not be the case right now but there's definitely signs of improvement in the area.
It has both positives and negatives but there is never dull moment. I briefly worked in a big shiny garage when I finished university, it wasn't for me but I can see the attraction for some customers. On a personal level, I enjoy the variety of work that my job offers which I don't think (happy to be corrected!) I'd be afforded in a larger dealership, regardless of the role.
It's certainly a changing landscape with e-commerce and the like growing around us but I feel from talking to our customer base on a daily basis that there's still a place for dealers like us that are focused on the local community rather than the county or even country as a whole.

Interesting read there Andrew, I'm assuming you are part of the company in your user name!It has both positives and negatives but there is never dull moment. Where do you see your company & dealers in general in 10 years time?
Personally I think small dealerships will survive & may possibly even have an upsurge due to the maintenance involved with EV's.
I also believe, as you will see from previous posts, large dealer groups will survive & evolve due to the large sums being spent by them for investment in premises & the purchase of existing businesses.
Despite the 'thoughts' of another poster here, a dealer group, does not borrow £40 million to invest in their existing business for a mere 10 years!!
I think with any business it's important to stay flexible and relevant. Listen to your customers and keep an eye on what makes you money and what costs you money. It sounds so straight forward written down but it's amazing how many people lose sight of these things.
With a lot of smaller garages if it's not going to go into the hands of a larger group and there isn't an heir to take it over then the site will normally be sold for development. With the price of land seemingly always on the up there's always going to be somebody interested in buying it. It's a relatively easy way for the aging motor trader to retire. I'd guess this is where a lot of the smaller garages are going.
I think to work in the motor trade at our level you've got to have an interest in cars. That's what drew me to it and that's why in 10 years I imagine I'll be doing much the same thing. The big groups certainly aren't going away but I think due to investment costs you won't get new stand alone garages like ourselves popping up so I guess over time it's logical we'll get rarer.

Now you are just being stupid. Do Apple / McDonalds etc accept trade ins? can you haggle the price? A "dealer" in anything makes... deals.....

Here's another North Wales one. The R J Williams, the Honda dealer in Talsarnau near Harlech. Its always absolutely rammed with cars and so are the nearby verges.

Just up the road is the Toyota dealer in Harlec which, while small, looks massive compared to the Honda dealer.
