Is it just me and a few of my friends who have no real clue what their cars (current and older) do MPG wise?

What I mean is, sure, I have had things which I know will be much better on fuel, but I never really cared what the actual figures were.

I have never tried to work it out in almost 30 years of driving.

They are always "Pretty good", "Not so good" or "Not too bad" etc.

Someone once told me "real" petrolheads never know and never try to figure it out. hehe

I know mine was bad - RS6
Now slightly better SL500

If the light comes on, I put petrol in.
Don't think to much about it or I'd be sad.

I used to be fastidious, but now I just rely on the OBC.
I, nearly always, drive for economy. I used Road Trip Lite.

It depends which car I'm in.
The Merc is always telling me and so the info is there.
In my TVR's, I just know 'in the 20's' and that's enough info for fuel stop planning when heading to Germany or Spain or somewhere distant.

I like to know/care what my mpg is in my C180 shed - I use it for my daily commute so it's something to take my mind off the fact I've left my warm bed to travel into an office (as much as I enjoy my job).

My C63 - don't know, don't care. I put fuel in it, about 200 miles later I repeat. I occasionally like to work it out, laugh at my 16mpg consumption, and carry on making the planet a little bit warmer.

I also use Road Trip Lite, just for the fun really. I don't drive for economy.

I do obviously know what my MPG is but I don't really care if it does 24 or 18, smiles per mile not miles per gallon that I'm worried about hehe

My Seven has never been to a garage forecourt so I've never measured what I put in.

I made the tank to hold 38 Lts so that what it holds, well, 39 if the carbs are full. wink I have a couple of 20 Lt Jerry cans that get
filled with Momentum when I call in with the tintop so I fill the car from these before I go out. I've never used a full tank so no
idea on the MPG. If I had to guess I'd say perhaps 20 ?

I could measure the mpg for the Chevy van but I choose not to, I could possibly try to do the Camaro but it's too old to have a trip odometer and I am not sure the speedo reads right anyway.

I suspect neither are very far into double digits.

My current cars gets something in the 30s, that's as accurate as I know or care.

More importantly it gets almost 400 miles to a tank which is much better than my previous 2 cars.

My Diesel X5 goes a long way between fill ups and costs a lot, my 911 goes a short way and costs a reasonable amount.

I've never given a toss and never will. Life's too short.

I can't stand being in a car with someone who does that ludicrously timid, gentle driving "to keep their MPG up". The same types who keep multiple spreadsheets logging it all. People spend hours working all this stuff out...what is the matter with you? Just drive the bloody car FFS.

occassionally i've looked at my mpg (normally just have the distance to empty display) but it doesn't bother me in the slightest what i get (according to the car it's currently about 23mpg - i just decided to check). people brag about their 40+mpg, i'm just glad i'm not like them because every day i would die a little more inside, i like driving and try to enjoy myself on every journey no matter how mundane it should be and what i'm driving.

my OBC claims somewhere around 26, but i dont trust that, or care. the guys at work cant understand at all how i can drive something so thirsty and not be worried. i only drive 4-5k a year, suspect they're all covering over double that

Depends on what car im driving. My work van I couldnt care, neither do I care much for the family hack although it has trip computer.

However, I was loaning my mums car (kia venga 1.4d) the other week and reset the trip to see how frugal it actually was, averaged 52mpg round mostly city driving which I was determined to get higher. That lasted 3 days before I thought "wtf am I doing" and drove it normally for the rest of the week.

I don't care about my mpg in the financial sense as my mileage isn't high enough to really make a massive difference. I'm also happy to put up with low mpg as long as it's a car I enjoy - it's the price I'm willing to pay for what is effectively my hobby. I'd begrudge 15mpg in a car I hated driving, though!

That being said, I think it's worth knowing what your car generally does to the gallon just in case it suddenly drops off a cliff. At least you'll know something isn't running as it should. 15mpg for a the TVR and 25mpg for the Disco. smile

My personal preference has been to try and run cars in the 15-25 mpg area as they tend to be the fun cars. I've never bothered to know their actual mpg.

I tend to do a rough working out every time I fill up as to how much juice I've used. I don't lose secret much sleep over it though - fuel economy is only one of many financial variables in running a car.

I once tried to do a week of motoring where I drove like an absolute saint everywhere (this was in a petrol Freelander) - I returned 24 mpg. The following week where I just bombed around at normal velocities with no real care as to fuel-efficiency - I got 27 mpg....

Since then, I've just got in my Landy/MG and driven it / enjoyed it - I have to account for every penny at work - I'm not going to reduce my driving to a bean-counting exercise as well.

Mine tells me everyday, 17.6 mpg... Which is actually very poor for the car itself, do about 27mpg on a run

I keep track of mine but don't particularly care what it is.
Normally it hangs around 25 but I've had 39 on a run and 20 round town.

I know I'm getting an average of 18 mpg because the car tells me. Do I care? Not one bit.
