The pictures show that it's fitted with the portal axle conversion, hence the increased ride height and track.

These are damned expensive - one thing for certain, if there is going to be a 'production' model it will not have these fitted as standard, and the vehicle will differ quite significantly from that pictured.

Where did what go wrong?

So you don't like the image of some of the people who you've seen driving a G-class - what does that have to do with Daimler? Do you think they care that they can charge £100k plus (yes, they start at £92k but no-one buys poverty spec models) for something whose development budget was recouped decades ago? And even if you say 'yes, well they were never so shiny before', show me the Mercedes in the current passenger car line up that isn't? Daimler are doing what they do best - supplying what the market demands, making profits and keeping shareholders happy. The answer to your question is therefore - nothing went wrong. At all.

If you don't like a new, more comfortable, shiny G-Wagen then you can go and buy an old one. Please remind us all which car that's been around for years hasn't changed since its inception.

These used to have a cool sort of utilitarian thing going on, kind of the Unimogs little brother, they just seem to have done a complete about face.

Fair enough if they can sell them at that money, can see the attraction but just seems a bit of a weird thing to happen to an ancient model.

The pickup one that the article is about? It already is a production model (with portal axles) in the g500 4x4squared.

Yes, they may have done an about face but so has pretty much every other long-running car model; people don't just want utility any more, they want luxury and will gladly pay for it. That the G-Wagen's price is what it is simply is a reflection of that. It's simply great business - MB is supplying what the market demands and charges a premium for something that doesn't really cost them that much to make, as I said the R&D costs were recouped decades ago.

I think it's a bit weird to think that an ancient model would only appeal to the same people it used to two or three generations ago.

Not quite sure why they bothered with the camo, because nobody has ever snapped a G Class before.

In the last 40 years.

In which it has remained mostly unchanged.

Nobody.

Not sure why it even deserves mention to be honest. The only people that drive them are government employees, mafiosi and people that want you to think they are government employees or mafiosi. It's decrepit and pointless.

By the way, where is there any evidence that this is a pick-up at all? It simply looks like an extended wheelbase 4x4 squared, probably a special edition of the W463 before the W464 comes along next year.

I think it is a pickup, something about the rear tonneau just looks like there is space beneath. It would make sense; the 4x4sq was supposed to be a easier to live with version of the 6x6 pickup, so to offer a pickup and regular 4x4sq would make sense. As you say, wring out a few more sales before the new model lands. I saw some images on instagram of the rumoured new one, looks the same but slightly wider. Will be interesting to see, as it will probably hurt values of late model 463s.
